Hulu dramedy The Great is the story of the tumultuous marriage between Russian Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult) and his wife Catherine the Great, (Elle Fanning).

The third season — which, just like its name, is great — of the show was just dropped all at once on Hulu this past week, and if you’ve already binged your way through it, you may be wondering if there’s more of The Great to come.

Will there be The Great Season 4? Here’s everything we know about the future of Hulu’s not-so-historically-accurate smash hit.

Will There Be a Season 4 of The Great?

Hulu has not yet confirmed if there will be a season four of The Great. However, in a recent interview with Collider, Fanning said she was open to the idea of another season, though [MAJOR SPOILER ALERT FOR SEASON 3] the show would look different given the fact that Peter’s character dies during Season 3, Episode 6.

“I’ve definitely thought about it,” Fanning said, referring to a fourth season of The Great. “I do feel a pressure because what Nick brings to Peter and how larger than life he is, there is that absence there.”

She continued, “I think is important that we feel that absence in the second half of the season because it goes with the grief and it really works. But then, I also had to figure out a way to try to fill that hole, so that it wouldn’t just become only about sadness because our show is as a comedy, as well, for sure. The way that the season ends and her dance and how she cuts her hair, she’s reborn and she’s changed so much.”

Fanning added that her character evolves every season, noting, “She always changes, but this time, she’s really prepared to step into herself, on her own. The whole series, she has always had Peter, and now, she has to actually let him go, to be able to be the leader that she needs to be. So, it would be exciting to get to do that.”

So while we don’t yet know if The Great will return, there has always been roughly a year and a half between seasons, so we can safely say that if it comes back, we would likely be looking at a late 2024 or early 2025 return.

Back in 2020, one of the show’s executive producers, Marian Macgowan, told Decider at Winter TCA that they originally pitched the show for six seasons.

“We believe there’s sufficient material to take us through until she is an old woman,” Macgowan said at the time. The real Catherine did rule for more than thirty years after Peter’s death, so there’s certainly plenty of real-life story to draw from for another season if the show does get renewed for a Season 4. Or five. or six.
