Where Was HBO Max’s ‘Love and Death’ Filmed?

HBO’s Love and Death tells the true story of Texas housewife Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) who was accused of murdering her good friend Betty Gore (Lily Rabe) in 1980 after Candy and Betty’s husband Allan (Jesse Plemons) had an affair.

It’s largely the same story that was told in the 2022 Hulu limited series Candy, which starred Jessica Biel, but there is one difference between the two shows: While Candy was filmed in Atlanta and throughout Georgia and was made to look like Texas, Love and Death shot on location in Texas to add to the show’s authenticity.

Where Was Love and Death Filmed?

HBO’s Love and Death takes place around Candy’s hometown of Wylie, Texas, near Dallas, but the majority of the show was shot on soundstages in Kyle, Texas, which is located just outside Austin.

There were quite a few real locations that were used for exteriors and interior shots, including St. Peter’s Church of Coupland, Lil Charlie’s Diner in Lockhart, TX, which was used as the setting for Candy and Allan’s first date, The Old Coupland Inn & Dancehall, the Williamson County Courthouse, and Inn of the Hills in Kerrville. One Texas Monthly writer‘s actual home in the Austin area was used for exterior shots of the Montgomery home as well.

According to the show’s production designer, Suzuki Ingerslev, more than 100 sets were created for the film to try and replicate the early ’80s feel of small-town Texas.

“Austin and the outlying suburbs offered us a lot of towns that hadn’t been developed. We were able to find towns like Lockhart and Smithville to double as an old Wylie, Texas…. We’re not doing a documentary, but we are trying to give the flavor of a time period,” Ingerslev said. “What was so important to me was explaining what happened in this American tragedy through visuals.”
