So much has happened in real life since the last season of Netflix’s Selling Sunset when Chrishell and Jason broke up and Christine left. In Season 6, there’s a lot of love in the air, but there’s a decent amount of tension too. Does the show still have that spark?

SELLING SUNSET (SEASON 6): STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: Chrishell Stause makes eye contact with the camera as she sashays down a staircase. In a voiceover, she gets right to it: “I know people think I’m having a mid-life crisis, but I’m having an awakening,” she says.

The Gist: New season, new listings, new drama, baby. Selling Sunset has always been a glossy combination of Los Angeles real estate listings beyond most people’s wildest dreams, mixed with the personal drama of the employees at The Oppenheim Group. This season, one of the biggest changes to the show is the absence of Christine Quinn, who has publicly stated that she won’t even watch, let alone appear on, this new season of Selling Sunset. The bells tolls for her, I guess? (Maya Vander is also not back for season 6.)

Another big difference, and really one of the big reasons we’re watching this season, is the Chrishell of it all. Oppenheim realtor Chrishell Stause broke up with owner Jason Oppenheim last season, and as we all know, she just got married to Australian rapper G-Flip. Obviously there are a lot of blanks we need filled in surrounding the relationship and at the start of the new season the pair aren’t yet married. As the season opens, Chrishell confides in her colleague Emma that she originally declined G’s request to go on a date, and then realized that she was only saying no because she had a “funny construct” in her head. And now here we are, in “this fun little G spot!” as Emma says. For whatever it’s worth, Chrishell truly does seem blissed out.

Everyone’s feeling the fallout from Jason and Chrishell’s breakup. Chrishell is mourning her strained friendship with Mary, who seems like she’s taken Jason’s side in the split, and Jason is literally pouring his own money into a condo renovation that he hopes to flip while also getting his groove back with a 24-yearold European named Marie-Lou.

Back at the office, new agent Bre Tiesi makes a pretty bold entrance (a mere six weeks after giving birth, no family leave for her), as a new hire. While Heather tries her best to make Bre feel welcome, Bre is very much the type who “is not here to make friends” as the old reality trope goes, she is only “about securing the bag” as the other reality trope goes. So when she comes in, she’s aloof and it’s clear she and Chelsea immediately hate each other and they play a ridiculous game of one-upmanship, with each of them bragging about their impressive client lists and sales numbers.

As we finally dip into the real estate of it all, Emma is holding an open house for a property she’s been repping for a while but a buyer just feel through. Chrishell hasn’t seen many of her co-workers since her breakup with Jason, and the big question on everyone’s minds is whether or not she’ll actually come. She does. And you know what? Even though things started out awkward, she and Jason handled things like mature adults and managed to get past their hurt feelings, but when it comes to her friendship with Mary, who Chrishell says wasn’t there for her during a time of need… it’s not so simple.

Our Take: Despite the fact that there are a few significant changes to the Selling Sunset cast this season, the formula remains largely the same. While the cast once existed purely within the confines of the show in the earliest seasons, now that they’re full-fledged reality TV stars, we’re dealing with that curious double-timeline phenomenon where we learn about what’s happening in their real lives in the news, and then watch it play out now that the show has premiered. This is obviously super common with the Kardashians, given how closely the media follows them, but now that Chrishell got married in real life, we’re forced to care about both the real-world timeline and the show timeline and follow along with both. 2023 is so weird, man.

But aside from that, the show delivers on everything it always has, regaling us with office drama wrapped in bandage dresses, and side-eyes with a side of escrow. It is everything you think it will be, and I’m sorry not sorry to say that Christine’s absence is barely felt.

Sex and Skin: Call me Diane Keaton, but the brokers’ business casual attire on this show shows more skin than any of my bathing suits.

Parting Shot: “Is there a world where you can forgive Mary for not being there for you?” an off-camera producer asks Chrishell. Chrishell stares blankly at the camera and doesn’t respond. And here we thought her blissed-out in-love vibe was going to mean she was ready to forgive and forget!

Sleeper Star: Bre is one to watch for sure, not just because she’s already going toe-to-toe with Chelsea this season, but she seems to have no tolerance for anyone’s bullshit, an attitude that will certainly be the cause of… some bullshit.

Most Pilot-y Line: “I mean business, I’m about my business, and I’m here to fuck this shit up,” newcomer Bre says, and everything about this woman, from her love of a tight, high pony to her see-through eyes screams Christine 2.0. Oh, and did I mention she is one of the mothers of Nick Cannon’s many children?

Our Call: STREAM IT… but only if you’re in the market for a 4 bedroom, 3 bath nestled in the Hollywood Hills with dramatic views and even more dramatic relationships.
