The new Apple TV+ series The Last Thing He Told Me comes to its bittersweet end today, but is this really the end for Hannah (Jennifer Garner), Bailey (Angourie Rice), and Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)? Does the final coda for the series tease that there’s still more to come? Will there be a The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2?

Based on the bestselling novel by Laura Dave, The Last Thing He Told Me follows the story of Hannah Hall, a prominent wood sculptor who finds her idyllic life turned upside down when her husband Owen’s start up company is investigated for fraud. Owen immediately goes on the run, leaving only a duffle bag of cash and a few cryptic notes for Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey. While the rest of the world believes that Owen is a villain, Hannah thinks something darker is actually going on. Her suspicions take her and Bailey to Austin, Texas, where they unravel dangerous secrets from Owen’s past. Namely, that Owen is really Ethan and Bailey is Kristin. Owen had to change their identities after his first wife was killed in retribution for Owen turning witness against his father-in-law’s crooked business practices. Owen went on the run so his former enemies wouldn’t go after him or Bailey.

The Last Thing He Told Me ends with Hannah striking a devil’s bargain with Bailey’s shady grandfather, Nicholas Bell (David Morse). But does Hannah’s plan work? And is there a chance that she could be reunited with Owen once again? Will there be a second season of The Last Thing He Told Me on Apple TV+? Here’s everything we know about The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2…

The Last Thing He Told Me Ending Explained:

Hannah is given a horrible choice in the finale of The Last Thing He Told Me. She can put her faith in Witness Protection, which would mean forcing Bailey and herself to give up everything they love about their lives. Even worse, Nicholas Bell’s goons have already infiltrated Witness Protection in the past so Bailey’s life might still be in danger. The one silver lining to this option is the Feds can eventually reunite Hannah and Bailey with Owen.

The alternative? Make a deal with Nicholas Bell himself. After all, everyone’s mad at Owen, not Bailey. It’s Owen who needs to make himself scarce for the rest of his life to protect Hannah and Bailey. Hannah decides to offer Nicholas Bell a chance to forge a relationship with Bailey with the understanding that no one within the gangster operation he works with will hurt Hannah and Bailey. She and Bailey will return to their lives in San Francisco. The catch here is that she can never see Owen again.

Hannah estimates this is what Owen would want as it is better for Bailey. Nicholas Bell takes the deal. Hannah and Bailey return home.

The final scene in The Last Thing He Told Me jumps ahead five years into the future. College-aged Bailey and Hannah are close, happy, and well. Hannah is in her bespoke shop waiting for Bailey and her new boyfriend to arrive when she notices a customer wearing the wooden wedding ring she gave Owen. It is Owen, albeit wearing a scruffy beard and baseball cap to keep a low profile. He touches her wrist lovingly and whispers, “The could-have-been boys still love you,” before leaving. Bailey then arrives, calling Hannah, “Mom.”

Will There Be a The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2?

Probably not! The Last Thing He Told Me has been marketed as a limited series. It was designed as a simple, straight-forward adaptation of Laura Dave’s novel. The story is less about Hannah and Owen finding their happily ever after than it is about Hannah bonding with Bailey. As we see in the final scene, Owen still loves Hannah, but — perhaps more importantly — Bailey and Hannah are as tight as can be.

Perhaps if the show is a huge hit for Apple TV+, they’ll consider a second season, but there’s been no evidence that it’s more popular than, say, Ted Lasso. Chances are this is it for The Last Thing He Told Me.
