Adam McKay Reveals His Emotional First Reaction to ‘Succession’ Series Finale: “I Knew What Was Coming, and Still!”

Succession executive producer and director Adam McKay just revealed his initial response to the show’s shocking series finale, and his words have done nothing to quell our fears about the fate of the Roy family.

McKay, who has been an executive producer on the show since Season 1, shared that he recently watched the series finale to give notes to show creator Jesse Armstrong. Without spoiling the ending, he shared his emotional reaction in a recent interview with Variety.

“Oh, my God. Wow!” McKay told the outlet. “I knew what was coming. And still! Oh, my God. Wow.”

He added, “I had to emotionally recover after watching it!”

Succession is ending with the Season 4 finale, set to air this Sunday, May 28.

Though fans were given ample notice that Season 4 would be the last installment of the show, these last couple of episodes have been jam-packed with surprising moments and powerful performances from the cast as we careen toward the end. With Logan dead, a new U.S. president installed, and the Matsson deal still percolating in the background, we’re all left wondering: who will become the CEO of Waystar?

What we do know is that Sunday’s episode has a lot of loose strings to tie up. But it looks like Succession fans shouldn’t expect the tidy ending we were hoping for.

“We knew it would be the final series [while filming], however, the way the series ends, a number of the cast felt it was left somewhat ambiguous,” Shiv Roy actress Sarah Snook recently told Marie Claire.

Armstrong teased at a similar idea when the finale was first announced.

“I have caveated the end of the show, when I’ve talked to some of my collaborators, like: Maybe there’s another part of this world we could come back to, if there was an appetite?” he said.

We’re hoping that means the Disgusting Brothers will get their own spinoff series.
