The Spanish thriller Muted has left everyone speechless. The series premiered all six episodes on May 19, 2023, on Netflix and immediately found itself topping the Top 10 chart. After over 72 hours, Muted is still occupying the #5 spot among all television shows on the platform.

Created by Aitor Gabilondo, the show follows Sergio Ciscar (Arón Piper) as he is released from prison after six years. He was jailed for having killed his parents, which are allegations that he denies. While in prison, the young man stopped speaking and hasn’t given information about the events that led to the incident.

Sergio’s mysteriousness is what draws psychologist Ana Dussel’s (Almudena Amor) attention. She has studied Sergio since the murders and decided to continue watching him after his release. She begins to follow him 24/7, even in the privacy of his own home. This leads to some major complications, especially after she enlists one of his true crime-obsessed fans Marta (Cristina Kovani) to go undercover and get close to him.

How Does Netflix’s Muted End? Muted Ending Explained:

Towards the end of the series, Ana lands herself in a tough pickle. The psychologist parts ways with Marta and decides to get to know Sergio, herself. It is also revealed that she’s the adopted mother of his sister, Noa (Irene Virgüez), who was abandoned after the alleged murder. Sounds like she might be breaking some ethical rules, huh?

In the finale episode, Sergio learns the truth about Ana after Marta shows up during her undercover interrogation. Marta tells the ex-convict that Ana has been spying on him. She brings him around his house and points out the various cameras that have been planted and, in response, he destroys them, leaving Ana vulnerable as she now lacks the protection from her team, who have been watching her from back in the office. However, one of the cameras in the main room still works.

Earlier, Anna tried to get Noa to meet with Sergio, but her husband refused. This brings the husband and daughter to the control room where they can see Sergio and Ana interact through the secret cameras. At this point, Sergio tells Ana that his mother made him take experimental drugs as a child and wanted to do so on Noa.

In response, Sergio defends his younger sister and fights against his mother about the experimentation. During flashbacks to the argument, Sergio’s mother is covered in blood after the ex-convict cut her with a knife. He yelled at her, “You’ll do the same thing to her, won’t you?” referring to his sister. His mother ran outside to the balcony and Sergio followed her. The man then slashed her ankles as they were fighting and pushed her off the roof. His father arrived at the scene and began arguing with Sergio, and the young man threw him off the balcony as well. The camera then pans around and reveals that his sister saw the whole thing.

The account contradicts his previous claims that his father was the one who pushed his mother off the balcony and then committed suicide. Noa decides to leave the control room and tell her mother the truth. She arrives at Sergio’s apartment and tells him, “I was right there.” She says their mother was medicating him because he was “out of control.” She insists, “We were scared of you. What’s not true is that mom abused you. She was cold and not very affectionate, but she loved us, and she loved you. You killed her.” Noa urges her mother to leave with her, but the psychiatrist stays with Sergio and holds his hand. Eventually, she reunites with her father and they go home.

Back at Sergio’s apartment, the ex-convict leads Ana out onto the balcony and they venture near the edge. Ana embraces him while crying. There is a close-up of Sergio smirking and the secret cameras grow pixelated. Ana is then seen falling off the balcony while Sergio watches. It is unclear whether Ana jumped off the balcony or was pushed by the alleged murderer, who appears to still be alive at the end of the series.
