Ray Stevenson, the actor known for his roles in films like The Three Musketeers, Thor and Kill the Irishman, has died. He was 58.

His death was first reported by the Italian outlet Repubblica, which alleged that Stevenson died while filming a project on the island of Ischia after being hospitalized Saturday (May 20) afternoon.

News of his death was later reported by The Wrap, which confirmed Stevenson had died but shared his “cause of death is currently undisclosed.”

Decider has reached out to Stevenson’s rep for comment, but did not hear back by time of publication.

Per Stevenson’s IMDb biography, he was born in  Lisburn, Northern Ireland on May 25, 1964. While he originally pursued a career in interior design, he enrolled in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and began his professional acting career after graduating at 29.

Stevenson’s acting credits span decades and genres. He got his start in the early ’90s, when he appeared in A Woman’s Guide to Adultry. He later appeared in shows like Murphy’s Law and HBO’s Rome, which he starred in from 2005 through 2007 as Titus Pullo.

His film career included a standout role in The Theory of Flight, plus appearances in Punisher: War Zone, The Other Guys, The Book of Eli and 2011’s Thor, in which he played Volstagg, a role he reprised in sequels Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. He also appeared in the Divergent film series, appearing in the first installment as Marcus and returning to play the role again in 2016’s Allegiant.

Stevenson’s other notable credits include parts in Dexter, Black Sails, and Medici, as well as The Spanish Princess and Vikings. He also was a part of the RRR cast, playing Scott Buxton in the buzzy, award-winning action drama.

His other recent roles include 2022’s Memory, plus the TV series Das Boot and Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday. He is set to appear in the upcoming Star Wars spinoff series Ahsoka, in which he will play Baylan Skoll. The show is now in post-production, per IMDb. Stevenson is also posthumously expected to appear in Gateway to the West and Cassino in Ischia.
