Extraction 2

Extraction 2, which is now streaming on Netflix, does everything an action movie sequel is supposed to do. The action is even bigger, the stunts are even more death-defying, and the handheld camera “oner” take is even longer than the first film. Now all that remains to be seen is whether Extraction 2 can attract even more viewers than the 2020 movie Extraction, which was a mega-hit for Netflix.

Directed by Sam Hargrave, and written by Marvel alum Joe Russo (who also produced the film with his brother Anthony, via their production company AGBO), Extraction 2 gives viewers very a teensy bit more context on who, exactly, Chris Hemsworth’s character is. But mostly, it just delivers a buttload of really cool action scenes.

And unlike the first film, which very nearly killed off Tyler Rake for good, Extraction 2 clearly leaves room for more movies to be made. Read on for a full breakdown of the Extraction 2 plot summary and the Extraction 2 ending explained.

Warning: Major Extraction 2 spoilers ahead, obviously.

Extraction 2 plot summary:

After getting shot in the neck and falling into a river at the end of the first movie, Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) is somehow, miraculously, alive. He is nursed back to health and advised to go into retirement. That doesn’t last long. A man named Alcott, played by a surprise Idris Elba, shows up and offers Tyler a new mission: rescuing a mother and her two children from a prison in Georgia, where they are being held captive by their ruthless mob boss father. Tyler says no way man, he’s totally retired. Then Alcott drops the bomb that person hiring Tyler is none other than his ex-wife. Yes, the same ex-wife that Tyler abandoned—to serve his country, to be fair— after he found out their son had a terminal illness. How can Tyler say no?

So Tyler does some push-ups, chops some wood, moves some rocks, and he’s right as rain again. He gathers his team from the first film—Nik Kahn (played by Golshifteh Farahani) and her brother, Yaz (played by Adam Bessa)—and off they go to infiltrate the Georgian prison. Tyler successfully frees his targets, Ketevan (played by Tinatin Dalakishvili), and her two children, Sandro (Andro Jafaridze) and Nina (a single part played by sisters Miriam and Marta Kovziashvili). He successfully kills the mob boss father. But word travels fast. Soon, the mob boss’s brother, Zurab (Tornike Gogrichiani)—and the entire fictional Georgian mafia, known as the Nagazi—are after Tyler’s crew.

The chase scene that follows is an epic, 21-minute action sequence filmed to look like it was done in one take. (You can read more about how the movie pulled it off in Decider’s interview with director Sam Hargrave.) Our heroes manage to get away. Hooray! But Ketevan’s oldest, Sandro, is understandably upset when he learns his mother had his father killed. He’s so upset, in fact, that he secretly calls his uncle Zurab and rats out their location to the mafia.

There’s another surprise in store: It turns out that Tyler’s ex-wife, Mia (Olga Kurylenko), is Ketevan’s sister. That’s why Mia hired Tyler, that’s why Tyler can speak Georgian, and that’s why he had to take this mission. Ketevan is his sister-in-law. After that revelation—and after Tyler’s unsuccessful attempt at a heart-to-heart with his nephew—Zurab’s men show up and attack, thanks to Sandro’s tip.

In the fight that follows, Nik’s brother Yaz is killed. Sad! Sandro further betrays his family by deciding to join Zurab, though he does ask his uncle not to kill his mother. Tyler and his team regroup at Tyler’s ex-wife’s house. Tyler apologizes for abandoning his son while he was dying. He promises his ex-wife that he will save Sandro, even though he couldn’t save their son.

Meanwhile, Sandro quickly realizes his Uncle Zurab is a whole lot more evil than he realized. Despite Zurab’s men advising him not to track down and kill Tyler Rake, Zurab is determined to avenge his brother’s death. He straps Sandro in a bomb vest to use him as bait. Tyler happily takes said bait.

Extraction 2 ending explained:

After an intense, hand-to-hand combat showdown between Tyler and Zurab, Tyler finally manages to kill Zurab. (He even shoots him in the head, so, yeah, he’s dead!) Nik has been gravely injured but ultimately lives. Sandro is fine. It’s a happy ending. Yay!

Well, except for the fact that Tyler and Nik are now inmates in a prison in Georgia. Apparently, you can’t just ruthlessly murder a bunch of people without legal consequences. Those Georgia laws sure are weird. But don’t worry, they won’t be in prison for long. In the very last scene of the movie, Tyler is driven to a remote location with none other than Alcott, aka Idris Elba. Where has that guy been this whole time?

After some playful digs about Tyler’s name, Idris Elba offers to get him out of a prison, and a new job. “Come and work for my team,” he says. And yes, Tyler’s friend/lover/teammate Nik can come too.

What team is that, exactly? Who is Idris Elba’s mysterious boss? “A gnarly motherfucker. You’ll love him,” Elba replies. With that, the movie ends. Extraction 2 leaves it up to you to decide who Elba’s boss might be, be it the Prime Minister of England or another mafia boss. We just don’t know!

While Extraction 3 has not yet been greenlit, it’s safe to say this ending leaves the door open for another movie. As director Sam Hargrave told Decider, “There’s definitely an appetite for a third movie. I know AGBO has spoken of it, Netflix has mentioned they’d be excited to do it, and Hemsworth loves playing the character. I definitely have a bunch of ideas bouncing around up in this brain of mine.” So stay tuned.

Is there an Extraction 2 end credits scene?

No. While it’s always a good idea to watch the credits to pay your respects to the many people who worked hard on the film—especially a film as big as Extraction 2, which really does require an army—there is no mid-credits scene or after credits scene in Extraction 2. Time to go to bed!
