In a lengthy new interview with The Hollywood Reporter for the magazine’s June 21 cover, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan addressed just about every bit of gossip, news and controversy surrounding the franchise that made him a household name.

One of the juicier bits was Sheridan’s take on his supposedly contentious relationship with series star Kevin Costner, but buried deeper in the story were some details about his next high-profile project, a Yellowstone spin-off featuring Matthew McConaughey.

The show is being referred to as a “new chapter” in the Yellowstone universe, with Sheridan explaining that the McConaughey series will have an all-new cast and location.

“My idea of a spinoff is the same as my idea of a prequel — read into that what you will,” Sheridan told THR, alluding to the fact that fan-favorite characters from the original series will likely not be a part of the new show.

Sheridan said that he and McConaughey have been in talks regarding the new project for a while now (McConaughey is still in negotiations to star), but he regards the actor as a worthy heir to carry on the Yellowstone saga.

“He seems like a natural fit,” Sheridan said, adding, “We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.'”

Sheridan added, “There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story.”

The new show was supposed to premiere on the Paramount Network in December, but given the current WGA writer’s strike, the untitled project — along with the fifth and final season of Yellowstone — is on hold at the moment. Further production details are still pending.
