Better late than never.

Following her controversial loss to Jamie Lee Curtis at the Oscars earlier this year, Angela Bassett will receive an honorary Oscar Award for lifetime achievement.

The Academy is set to honor Bassett, Mel Brooks, and Carol Littleton, and Michelle Satter with honorary Oscar Awards for their “exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy,” Variety reports.

“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans,” Academy President Janet Yang said in a statement. “Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.”

Bassett received her second-ever nomination earlier this year for Best Supporting Actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Despite two nominations and over 40 years in the industry, the veteran actress has yet to secure an Oscar Award for a performance.

Her 2023 nomination for Black Panther also marked the first time a woman from a superhero movie received such recognition, Variety reports.

At the Oscars, she pointedly remained seated as Curtis went to collect her Best Supporting Actress award. Also nominated in the category was Everything Everywhere All At Once breakout star Stephanie Hsu, Kerry Condon from The Banshees of Inisherin, and Hong Chau from The Whale.

Many dubbed Curtis’s controversial win as a “legacy win.”

Bassett’s memorable performance in Black Panther did not go unnoticed, however. She won a Golden Globe earlier this year for the stunning Marvel movie.

The honorary Oscars will be presented at the 14th annual Academy’s Governors Awards ceremony on November 18. Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton are also scheduled to be recipients of honorary Oscars that night.
