After the release of its highly-anticipated sequel just last week, romance-lovers are returning to Netflix to stream the beloved film Through My Window prior to watching Through My Window: Across the Sea.

Based on the Wattpad story of the same name by Ariana Godoy, Through My Window is a captivating Spanish love story that showcases the unexpected relationship between Raquel (Clara Galle) and her mysterious next-door neighbor, Ares (Julio Peña).

Due to their differences, Raquel and Ares have never spoken a word to one another, despite the fact that she has had a crush on him for years (strictly by admiring him through her window, of course). As the plot progresses, Raquel makes it her sole mission to have Ares fall in love with her, regardless of their varying reputations, making for a must-see plot that leaves all viewers on the edge of their couches.

Considering that a “bad boy” like Ares wouldn’t dare cross paths with a “brainiac” like Raquel, this desire begins entirely one-sided. To Raquel’s delight, this quickly changes and (spoiler alert) her mission prevails as successful by the end of the film, concluding with the perfect segway into a sequel.

Shortly after the release of Through My Window in early 2022, Netflix confirmed that two more movies will coincide with the original film. The first sequel, Through My Window: Across The Sea (sometimes referred to as Through My Window 2) just landed on Netflix this past Friday, June 23rd. The second sequel will be titled Through My Window: Looking At You, and it will come out sometime in 2024 — fans are already counting down the days!

While everyone waits for the third part of the Through My Window movie series to drop, the Decider team compiled a list of similar films that can hopefully fill the void…

  1. After

Arguably the most similar movie to Through My Window is After, the first of a four-part (soon-to-be six-part) movie series that is sure to grasp the attention of all romance-lovers.

After follows the same “opposites attract” relationship trope as Through My Window, with an inexperienced teenage girl named Tessa Young (Josephine Langford) falling for a mysterious “bad boy” named Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin). Even though Tessa and Hardin have their differences from one another, we see undeniable chemistry between the unlikely pair throughout the entirety of the film, making for a love story that is very similar to that of Through My Window (and equally as engaging).

Regardless of their similar plotlines, fans have compared Through My Window to After, due to the fact that they both stem from Wattpad stories. Anna Todd published the beloved series on the app in 2013, however, the original storyline was based on the international boy band One Direction. Throughout her adaptation of After, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik are depicted as students at Washington State University, and Harry Styles is transformed into Hardin Scott for the movie adaptation.

With three sequels available to stream — After We Collided, After We Fell, and After Ever Happy — as well as two more on the way, the After series is lengthy enough to give you the teen romance fix you have been craving (and to help you live out your fangirl fantasies).

  2. The Kissing Booth

Stemming from yet another Wattpad story, The Kissing Booth is the first of a three-part movie series that fans have also compared to Through My Window.

The Kissing Booth tells the story of Elle Evans (Joey King), a teenager going through puberty who finds herself in a “forbidden romance” after a cheeky smooch in a kissing booth. Throughout the film, Elle develops a crush on her best friend’s brother, a “bad boy” named Noah Flynn (Jacob Elordi), ultimately following the “opposites attract” relationship trope once again. Chaos ensues when Elle must keep the peace with Lee (Joel Courtney), her best friend who she betrayed, all while pursuing her undeniable feelings for his older brother.

Fans have compared the relationship between Raquel and Ares in Through My Window and the relationship between Elle and Noah in The Kissing Booth to one another, as they each share the story of a young, inexperienced girl falling for a “bad boy.” Their varying reputations lead to complications in each of the films, adding an extra layer of drama to their respective storylines.

Since premiering in 2018, The Kissing Booth has had two sequels (the imaginatively named The Kissing Booth 2 and The Kissing Booth 3, with a new love interest named Marco Peña (Taylor Zakhar Perez) being introduced in the second film. With three movies that gained a great deal of popularity on social media, The Kissing Booth trilogy should keep you on your toes until Through My Window: Looking At You drops in 2024.

  3. The Duff

    the-duff-vod

Upon finding out she is “The DUFF” (the designated ugly fat friend) of her friend group, Bianca (Mae Whitman) embarks on a mission to turn her reputation around throughout the 2015 film, The Duff

After discovering the undesirable title that she has amongst her friends, Bianca partners up with an ultra-popular track athlete named Wesley (Robbie Amell) who agrees to help her shed her role as “The DUFF.” The unsuspecting duo quickly learns that they have undeniable chemistry, causing an unexpected romance to blossom between Bianca and Wesley.

As mentioned previously, the storyline of an uncool girl falling in love with one of the most popular guys in school is a perfect example of the “opposites attract” relationship trope we all know and love, and it allows The DUFF to draw quite a few similarities to Through My Window.

While The DUFF may not have as many steamy scenes as Through My Window, it is a fun-filled romance story that will leave you with a smile on your face from start to finish, adding a dash of humor to our list.

Based on the novel of the same name by Jenny Han, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before tells the story of a high school student named Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor), who writes secret letters to all the boys she has had a crush on in the past. Even though these letters were intended to be private, they eventually are sent out to their intended recipients, forcing Lara Jean to face awkwardness at school, as well as confrontation with some men of her past.

As more people begin to read the letters, Lara Jean begins a fake relationship with one of the recipients, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), in an attempt to stop more rumors from spreading. As true feelings begin to develop between the unlikely duo, viewers have found themselves glued to their television screens for the entire duration of the film, quickly joining the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before fandom. The sequel even brings in another love interest, John Ambrose McClaren (Jordan Fisher), causing fans of the three-part moxie series to decide whether they are on “Team Peter” or “Team John” – Who’s side are you on?

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is currently having a resurgence, due to the success of XO, Kitty, a spinoff of the three-part movie series that premiered on Netflix on May 18th. If television shows are more your thing, XO, Kitty is the perfect program to fill that void while we wait for the third part of the Through My Window series.

Much like we see in Through My Window, Purple Hearts captures yet another unexpected love story that is sure to tug on your heartstrings, this time between an aspiring singer-songwriter named Cassie (Sofia Carson) and a member of the United States Marine Corps named Luke (Nicholas Galitzine). Based on the novel of the same name by Tess Wakefield, Purple Hearts might just have you shedding a few tears by the end…

Early on in the film, we learn that Cassie is a type one diabetic who struggles to afford insulin, and Luke is a former drug addict who struggles to pay back his dealer, causing the unsuspecting pair to form a plan to help pay off their debts. Cassie and Luke agree to marry one another in order to receive military benefits, however, the line between real and pretend starts to fade when Luke suffers a severe injury, ultimately causing Cassie to rethink everything – Was this marriage REALLY just for the benefits, or did the unlikely pair fall in love along the way?

To top off this tear-jerker of a film, GRAMMY Award-nominated singer-songwriter Justin Tranter wrote and produced an eight-track project for the movie, making for a must-listen soundtrack that makes Purple Hearts even better than you could imagine.

If the Spanish aspect is the part you love the most about Through My Window, look no further! Palm Trees in the Snow is another Spanish romance film that you need to add to your watchlist ASAP.

Based on the novel of the same name by Luz Gabas, Palm Trees in the Snow tells the story of Clarence (Adrian Ugarte) and her mission to find answers regarding the death of her father (Alain Hernández). This mission causes her to embark on a journey to Africa, the land where her father and uncle (Mario Casas) spent most of their youth, where she ultimately uncovers an unexpected love story along the way.

Throughout this romance film, Clarence attempts to discover the truth about her uncle’s time in the colony, all while an eye-opening relationship transpires between him and a native woman. Throughout the film, we see the duo facing hardship due to their differences, much like we see with the varying reputations of Raquel and Ares in Through My Window

While both films have entirely different plots, Through My Window and Palm Trees in the Snow highlight unsuspecting relationships that are sure to grasp the attention of all romance-lovers.

  7. Sorry If I Call You Love

Another love story that adds the perfect amount of Spanish flair is titled Sorry If I Call You Love, based on the novel of the same name by Federico Moccia.

Serving as the third Spanish adaptation of Moccia’s teen-focused books, Sorry If I Call You Love captures the unlikely romance between Alex (Daniele Liotti), a tall, dark and handsome advertising executive, and Niki (Paloma Bloyd), a charming student. After his longtime girlfriend, Elena (Irene Montala), rejects his proposal, Alex quickly begins an unexpected relationship with Niki, despite their 20-year age gap. This “forbidden romance” makes for a very intriguing plot that is sure to leave all viewers on the edge of their seats.

The relationship between Raquel and Ares in Through My Window and the relationship between Niki and Alex in Sorry If I Call You Love are relatively similar to one another, due to the fact that each relationship is seemingly out of left field. Both pairs appear to be opposites from one another, once again highlighting the intriguing “opposites attract” relationship trope that we know and love.
