We’re back, baby! Are you like me and dissolved into tears after hearing the iconic Futurama theme song play at the end of the debut trailer for Hulu’s upcoming revival? After nearly a decade, Matt Groening’s popular animated series has been defrosted and will be returning to the small screen on July 24, 2023 and, per its new trailer, the show’s fan-favorite couple is still going strong!

The series is said to pick up right where it left off in 2013 when it was canceled on Comedy Central (boo, tomato, tomato), and will meet the Planet Express crew with a myriad of new problems. With Leela and Fry being endgame, a pandemic plaguing New New York and a Dune-inspired attack, along with the return of the original cast and creators, this new season is bound to be major.

Over 10 episodes, Hulu teases that the new season will “have something for everyone.” The synopsis reads, “New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries – including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles.”

The streamer continues to write that Season 11 will tackle “a whole new pandemic,” and the future of “vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture and streaming TV,” as the series takes place roughly a hundred years in the future.

Does the synopsis sound too good to be true? You’re not the only one who thinks so, but thankfully the trailer contains some genuine laughs and Groening just delivered an excellent season of The Simpsons, which had some noteworthy episodes (for the first in a long time), like its take on stan culture with a Taylor Swift-esque pop star and its wacky caterpillar infestation episode which resulted in an duel between Homer Simpsons and Ned Flanders. It looks like Groening has found some new inspiration after nearly four decades of constant television writing.

But back to the important part – the Futurama trailer opens with an answer to the question that many have been left pondering after the sudden cancellation. Are Leela and Fry still together? The two had an on-and-off relationship for years before finally tying the knot in the final episode, and according to the new trailer, they are still together. In the opening segment of the two-minute clip, Fry has his arm around Leela as they enter an office branded with the Hulu logo, and then they are later seen smooching to celebrate a reunion after a long trip. As someone who will always root for a simp, I’m glad things panned out for them.

Through quick flashes of the season, the trailer also teases a Western showdown in Crypto Country, an attack by a giant sandworm and a nonsensical conversation seemingly explaining their 10-year absence where Professor Farnsworth says they “survived a massive disruption in the flow of time.” There are also appearances from famed secondary characters Zapp Brannigan, television anchors Morbo and Linda van Schoonhoven, and Nibbler.

It also appears that Hulu is saving up its use of Bender’s iconic “bite my shiny metal ass” catchphrase as it didn’t appear in the trailer, but is bound to be said at some point in the new episodes – and is sufficed in the short clip with a scene of him yelling “burrow, burrow” at an innocent donkey.

John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman return to voice their original characters, along with creators Groening and David X. Cohen, who also serve as executive producers.

New network, new antics, but the same old crew. Futurama, we’re rooting for you!
