Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood‘s historic victories on American Idol launched their respective music careers. However, their first place wins also pitted them against one another in the eyes of fans, causing beef that was never there to begin with, according to Clarkson herself.

The “Since U Been Gone” singer sat down with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live and set things straight when a fan from Charleston called in asking about how the two have been pitted against each other for years.

Before the fan could even finish her question, Clarkson interjected by saying, “I know where you’re going with this.”

“People always pit us together and we don’t even know each other well enough to be pitted against each other,” she continued. “Like, literally, we’ve run into each other, like, a handful of times. There’s no beef between us. There’s nothing. We don’t know each other.”

Cohen ultimately prompted the fan to finish the rest of her question, which actually turned out to be: “What was your favorite part of having her as a guest on your talk how?”

Both Clarkson and the live audience burst into laughter, and Clarkson rose from her chair to clink glasses with fellow WWHL guest Rob Anderson behind the clubhouse bar before she exclaimed, “Look, everyone always asks me the ‘pitted against each other’ question!”

She continued, “It was awesome. It was great to have her on the show. I think the thing that was cool about it is that everybody always pits us against each other, and I don’t know why they do that— they don’t do that with dudes.”

Cohen affirmed, “They don’t do that with dudes.”

“We don’t even know each other well enough to do that. But I’d love to have her there in person. It was during COVID, so it was over Zoom,” Clarkson explained.

Clarkson won American Idol’s first season, while Underwood won Season 4, but the two have reportedly been dealing with feud rumors for years, and Clarkson’s appearance on WWHL was not the first instance of either denying any beef.

In 2018, Clarkson retweeted a poll that quite literally pitted her and Underwood against each other, asking which of the two of them is the “most iconic American Idol winner.”

She captioned her retweet, “I think we’re both winning in life and pretty blessed! Singers, mamas, CEO’s… #AmbitiousBlondes go ahead @carrieunderwood,” to which Carrie Underwood replied, “Whatever, girl, I voted for you!”

Underwood continued, “But seriously, I do wish more publications would just celebrate women’s success without pitting them against each other… Just my thoughts…anyway… Love ya’! Hope you’re well!”

Even upon searching “kelly clarkson carrie underwood” on Google, the two top two search suggestions are “Who is richer Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood?” and “Who is more successful Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood?,” only proving how people make them out to be competitors above anything else.
