Allison Mack, the former actor who was convicted for her role in recruiting women into the NXIVM sex cult, was released from prison on Monday (July 3), according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. The Smallville star served two years of her three-year prison sentence.

Mack was first arrested in 2018, before pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges in 2019. While she faced up to 17 years in prison, she was handed a shorter sentence for helping prosecutors convict NXIVM leader Keith Raniere, who is serving a 120-year prison sentence for sex trafficking, possession of child pornography, and forced labor conspiracy, among other charges.

Upon Mack’s 2021 conviction, a federal judge in Brooklyn claimed she was “an essential accomplice” to Raniere and that she used to her star status to “recruit and groom [women] as sexual partners” for the leader, per The New York Times.

The actress — who was said to deliver “slaves” to Raniere — was a high-ranking figure within NXIVM, which marketed itself as a self-help group. However, women recruited for a secret society within the cult were blackmailed and sexually assaulted, with some even branded with Raniere’s initials. In 2020, HBO Max (now called Max) released a docuseries about the organization called The Vow.

Ahead of her sentencing in 2021, Mack made several apologies in a lengthy letter, in which she said she felt “overwhelming shame” for her role in NXIVM.

“I threw myself into the teachings of Keith Raniere with everything I had,” she wrote, per Variety. “I believed, whole-heartedly, that his mentorship was leading me to a better, more enlightened version of myself. I devoted my loyalty, my resources, and, ultimately, my life to him. This was the biggest mistake and greatest regret of my life.”

The actress added, “I am sorry to those of you that I brought into NXIVM. I am sorry I ever exposed you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man. I am sorry that I encouraged you to use your resources to participate in something that was ultimately so ugly.”

Mack is best known for her role as Chloe Sullivan in Smallville, which follows teenage Clark Kent’s adventures before he becomes Superman. Aside from the superhero show, she also starred in Opposite Sex and Dirty Little Secret. Mack’s most recent role was a voiceover in the 2016 animated series Lost in Oz.
