Heather Graham was living every teenage girl’s dream in 1988 when she starred alongside Corey Haim and Corey Feldman in the teen comedy License to Drive. While the actress recently recalled having a “crush” on Haim during filming, she revealed why they never actually dated — and how she differed from the ’80s teen sensations.

In the movie, Haim’s character, Les Anderson, attempts to get his driver’s license in order to impress his high school crush, Mercedes (Graham). When he fails the test, he ends up “borrowing” his grandfather’s car to take her on a date. And after they accidentally put a dent in the hood and Mercedes gets too drunk and passes out, a night of mishaps ensues.

“He was so cute,” Graham told Yahoo Entertainment of Haim, who died in 2010 from pneumonia. “I probably had a crush on him at the time. He was such a cute movie star guy.”

However, the two — who were both teenagers while they filmed the classic movie — never sparked a relationship because Haim was already seeing someone at the time.

“He was dating this really groovy girl named Lala Zappa,” Graham recalled. “They were just the coolest [couple]. Her uncle was Frank Zappa and he was this movie star. I felt like I was this nerd with these two uber-cool people.”

In fact, she even declined an invite to go out on the town with the couple, telling the outlet, “I was too nerdy! I was 17 and I was still going to high school. They were emancipated and doing whatever they wanted. I was living a much more boring existence.”

Regarding her time spent with Haim and Feldman, Graham insisted that she was “pretty innocent” in comparison to the two. After all, License to Drive was her breakout role, whereas the two heartthrobs had already starred in The Lost Boys and would go on to make Dream a Little Dream the following year.

“They were a little bit more into experimenting with drugs, and I was just this super-sheltered suburban [kid],” she said, before later adding, “I felt very cool working with the Coreys. They were in movies that I had watched and really liked. It was a great introduction to being in a film — they were both really talented.”

Unfortunately, Haim’s experimenting turned into a much more serious problem as he got older; his addiction to cocaine and Valium landed him in rehab more than 15 times, per ABC News. Two years before his shocking death at only 38 years old, the child star opened up to People about his struggle with substance abuse.

“I’m a chronic relapser,” Haim admitted. “I guess I always will be.”

Like his friend, Feldman also developed drug and alcohol problems, but revealed in 2016 that he was 25 years sober. He told People at the time, “There’s nothing in this world that would ever make me do cocaine or heroin or any of that stuff ever again,” per The Daily Mail.
