The new official trailer for Netflix’s The Witcher Season 3: Volume 2 comes with the tagline,”Fight Like It’s Your Last,” and hints at Henry Cavill‘s bloody last moments as Geralt of Rivia. We’ve known since last fall that that Cavill was quitting the Netflix hit — Why? We have our theories… — but this trailer certainly makes his exit seem more ominous than we first thought. Sure, we’ve been told that Liam Hemsworth would be taking over the role in The Witcher Season 4, but the trailer for The Witcher Season 3: Volume 2 makes it seem like Geralt won’t survive that long. Is this really the beginning of the end of The Witcher as we know it?

The Witcher Season 3: Volume 1 ended on a humdinger of a cliffhanger. Almost as soon as Geralt and Yennefer (Anya Cholatra) had figured out that Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) was the evil mage behind the insidious plan to kidnap and replace Ciri (Freya Allan) with a puppet, Aretuza fell under attack. Would Geralt be able to survive the battle? Would Redania make for a new foe or an unlikely ally? Which of the many parties chasing Ciri catch up to her first? Well, The Witcher Season 3: Volume 2 trailer has some answers…

The main trailer for The Witcher Season 3: Volume 2 opens with the absolute destruction of Aretuza. Yennefer embraces a crying Ciri on a hillside and tells her that no matter where she goes, they will never be apart. Geralt is there and says, “We didn’t come this far just to abandon each other.”

What’s clear from the scenes of cataclysm, battle, and devastation in the trailer is that although destiny brought Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri together, forces are tearing them apart. It seems that Ciri will have to embark on her own journey to a strange land — one perhaps inhabited by The Wild Hunt? — while Geralt and Yennefer battle their enemies.

While that may all seem par for the course with The Witcher, there’s a definite sense of dread in this trailer that we haven’t seen before. As the tag line suggests, these characters are fighting like it’s their last. The final moments of the trailer show one of Geralt’s swords shattering mid-fight and then cuts to a shot of his bloody body floating lifelessly in the water.

Would The Witcher really kill off Geralt before Liam Hemsworth joins the cast? Or is Netflix just hinting that Henry Cavill is going out with a dramatic bang?

The Witcher Season 3: Volume 2 premieres on Thursday, July 27 on Netflix.
