Legendary singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at age 56.

Over O’Connor’s career, she released 10 studio albums and dominated Billboard charts with her cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” originally sung by Prince.

The Irish musician also serves as the subject of the 2022 documentary Nothing Compares, which went on to win Best Feature Documentary at the Irish Film & Television Awards.

Made by Kathryn Ferguson, who also directed O’Connor’s 2013 “4th and Vine” music video, the 97-minute documentary explores the life and legacy of O’Connor, mostly in the early years of her career.

O’Connor reached worldwide acclaim following the release of her 1987 debut album The Lion and the Cobra and later found herself mostly exiled from the mainstream in 1992 after ripping a photo of the Pope (as a form of protest against sexual abuse within the Catholic Church) while performing on Saturday Night Live.

Ferguson gave insight into her inspiration for Nothing Compares in a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I wanted to make a film with her because of how she affected me as an Irish person. I’m very interested in women who put their head above the parapet and have been deemed too noisy or potentially too dangerous,” Ferguson said. “It’s such a common trope that seems to happen again and again. There are so many women I admire that it happened to.”

The movie had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and was later acquired by Showtime Documentary Films. Decider’s Johnny Loftus praised the movie in his review, writing, “Powerfully told and elliptically crafted, Nothing Compares ably connects Sinead O’Connor’s past and present to one powerful stretch of her nearly 40 years in music and unflinching expression of self.”
