Sarah Silverman Is “Pissed” That “Indie Films” Are Still Being Made During the SAG-AFTRA Strike

The SAG-AFTRA strike has prompted a lot of passion from union members, including Sarah Silverman.

The comedian took to Instagram to air her grievances about the waivers that now 45 indie productions have received from the union, allowing them to continue filming.

“Can somebody explain to me what I’m not understanding?” Silverman began her video, which was posted yesterday (July 27).

She continued to express that she feels “fucking pissed off” about the movies being made.

“Movie stars are making movies cause they’re ‘independent movies,'” she shared. “And SAG is allowing it because if they do sell it to streaming, it has to be because streaming is abiding by all the things we’re asking for. That’s just working.”

She added that “the strike ends when they come to the table and we make an agreement,” but these indie films interfere with that end point, as their “goal is to sell them to streaming.”

“And the streaming service has to agree,” she said. “Yeah, that’s called the end of the strike which is now probably going to be exponentially prolonged because they have movie stars making movies.”

Silverman revealed that she got offered an indie movie, but turned it down, as did a bunch of her friends.

“And now some of my friends are saying yes and I’m really pissed,” she ranted. “Please, explain to me why I shouldn’t be angry because people are making real deal sacrifices. People, writers, actors, crew people, all these people are making — they’re sacrificing their livelihood for this cause.”

Silverman said she believed that she and her fellow union members “should see every movie star out there striking along.”

“All these things that you get because of your union and you can’t stand with your union?” she exclaimed.

“So I don’t know if I’m mad at these movie stars who are making these indie movies that are obviously going to go to streaming, or am I mad at SAG for making this interim deal for these indie movies?” she asked.

The post has received mixed reactions from her fellow celebs. Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth commented, “I don’t understand either,” and Mandy Moore, who recently opened up about “81 cent checks” in residuals, showed her solidarity with three applause emojis. Amy Sedaris also supported Silverman by commenting, “right on.”

Others have critiqued Silverman’s post, like New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, who wrote, “I think we are striking certain particular contractual agreements with the amptp- not all work.” Juliette Lewis of Yellowjackets fame added that she’s “for it for [her] crew and family,” citing her brother who is a laborer and whom she would love “to work on an independent production.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, some films that have received waivers from SAG include Death of a Unicorn starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega and the star-studded The Killer’s Game, featuring Dave Bautista, Sofia Boutella, Ben Kingsley and Ice Cube.
