New Movies & Shows To Stream This Weekend: Heartstopper, The Chi, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty + More

When we last left Netflix’s Heartstopper, high school friends Nick and Charlie were just starting to figure out if a romance existed between them. With the premiere of season two this week, we’ll finally see how they handle life as a couple as they face their internal struggles and the pressure from those around them. On Showtime, The Chi returns, reuniting us with Kevin (Alex Hibbert), Jake (Michael Epps), Papa (Shamon Brown Jr.) and the rest of the cast of characters as they continue to navigate love, careers, and friendship. And on Max, you can tune in to the premiere of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, which picks up in 1980 just as the Lakers begin their heated rivalry with the Celtics.

New on Netflix August 3: Heartstopper (Season 2)

Season one of Netflix’s high school drama Heartstopper has a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for good reason. The tender, full-of-heart series, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel, is set at a British boys’ school and stars Joe Locke and Kit Connor as classmates who become unlikely friends. Locke plays Charlie, a gay student with feelings for Connor’s Nick, his straight pal who defies expectation by being more sensitive than you’d expect, and trying to come to terms with his own sexuality at the same time.

New on Paramount+ with Showtime August 4: The Chi (Season 6)

This Sunday marks the premiere of the sixth season of The Chi, which is the biggest season yet. The Lena Waithe-produced coming-of-age drama about a group of friends from Chicago’s South Side is getting a super-sized sixteen episode season, split into two parts. The first eight episodes will air Sundays on Showtime, starting August 6, or you can stream it on Paramount+ with Showtime two days earlier, on Fridays. There is no release date yet for the second half of the season.

New on Max August 6: Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (Season 2)

Season one of Max’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty is the story of the Los Angeles Lakers ascent to basketball domination in the 1980s, starting with the purchase of the team by owner Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) and the arrival of a young player named Magic Johnson’s (Quincy Isaiah). The second season of the series will pick up after the Lakers’ historic 1980 championship win against the 76ers, and will explore the rivalry between the Lakers and the Boston Celtics, and Johnson’s relationship with rival Larry Bird, played by Sean Patrick Small.
