Home Improvement actor Zachery Ty Bryan was released from jail Thursday (Aug. 3) morning after getting arrested during an alleged domestic violence dispute last week.

The child star is facing fourth-degree assault, third-degree robbery charges and a misdemeanor claim of harassment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The arrest came after police responded to a domestic violence incident on July 28 between Bryan and an unnamed woman in Eugene, Oregon.

“Presumption of innocence is extremely important and people should withhold judgement until they see what the actual facts are,” Bryan’s attorney, John Kolego, told THR.

Bryan was arrested for assault under the Abuse Prevention Act, which is used when someone is accused of attacking someone who had a restraining order against them for domestic violence.

Bryan was previously arrested in Eugene in 2020 for assaulting his then-girlfriend, Johnnie Faye Cartwright. He was booked with felony strangulation and fourth-degree assault, amongst a string of other charges, though the charges were later reduced to misdemeanor menacing and misdemeanor assault. According to Bryan, the arrest “got so blown out of proportion.”

He was then ordered to attend a violence-prevention program and not have any contact with Cartwright. But the couple, who share three children, later got engaged in November 2021.

After Friday’s arrest, Cartwright told Us Weekly, “I’ll always want what’s best for the father of my children.”

The details of his 2020 arrest were investigated in a report from The Hollywood Reporter, which also included accounts from four separate sources who claimed Bryan stole almost $50,000 from them as part of a scheme.

In the report, Home Improvement star Tim Allen commented on his former co-star’s recent bout of legal issues.

“I don’t know what’s going on with him,” he said at the time. “Zach is a great kid who has grown into a complex man. All you can do is step aside and let somebody go through their process. At a certain point, he deviated from the guy I know… I don’t know what happens when people get corrupted. You just don’t know.”

Bryan played Allen’s eldest son, Tim, in the classic sitcom.

Bryan is set to appear in court on Sept. 5.
