Cancel your evening plans, because Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is coming to digital tomorrow, meaning the movie will be available to purchase on platforms like Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, and more. The film will also be available on DVD, 4K, and Blu-Ray on September 5, and will include over 90 minutes of extras.

The animated superhero movie was a hit when it opened in theaters in early June, earning $379 million at the domestic box office, making it one of the highest-earning films of the year so far. And yet, Sony is pushing the film to video-on-demand after just over a month in theaters. (It does look like there are a few select theaters that will still be playing Across the Spider-Verse, even after the film is released on digital.)

It may seem like a surprising move, but it’s not unprecedented. Sony’s previous theatrical release, 65, was also pushed to digital after about a month in theaters and showed up on Netflix about three months after that. Last month, Universal pushed the star-studded Wes Anderson film, Asteroid City, to digital after just three weeks in theaters. Even though COVID-19 precautions have lifted and more people are returning to theaters, studios clearly still see a financial benefit to getting some movies on video-on-demand ASAP.

How to watch Across the Spider-Verse on streaming:

Beginning on Tuesday, August 8, Across the Spider-Verse will be available to buy digitally on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime and Google Play, the movie costs $19.99 to pre-order.

When will Across the Spider-Verse be streaming on Netflix?

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will likely be on Netflix before the end of the year. That’s because Netflix has a deal with Sony Pictures that gives the streamer the rights to the Sony movies in the “Pay 1” window, meaning the first streaming window after the film’s home media release. For 65, that was four months after the movie opened in theaters. If Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse follows a similar release strategy, you may see it on Netflix as early as October 2023.

That said, because Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a much more anticipated film than 65, it’s possible the wait may be longer. Pre-pandemic, the Pay 1 window was usually nine months after a movie opened in theaters, which would for Spider-Man would mean January 2024. But we have a feeling you’ll see the animated film on Netflix before the end of the year.

Stay tuned to see where Spider-Man swings off to next.
