Who’s Voicing Korvo in ‘Solar Opposites’ After Justin Roiland’s Ousting?

Solar Opposites is back on Hulu for some intergalactic fun, but this time without Justin Roiland. 

The streamer ended its relationship with the show creator and Korvo voice actor after he was charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit in January 2023.

Charges were dropped the following March due to lack of evidence, but the damage had already been done. Both Hulu Originals and 20th TV Animation had already parted ways with Roiland with their sights set on continuing his ongoing projects without him.

Roiland and Mike McMahan, known for Star Trek: Lower Decks, created Solar Opposites in 2018, and Hulu placed a two-season order. The first season premiered in 2020 and Roiland, along with co-creating and executive producing, voiced the lead character Korvo, a smart alien scientist who hates Earth.

Recent news indicated that the character would be recast and in June, it was announced that British actor Dan Stevens would take over the role. 

The series released all 11 episodes of its latest season on August 14, 2023 and quickly addressed the character’s new voice. In the opening sequence of the first episode, Korvo’s partner Terry (Thomas Middleditch) accidentally hits the other alien in the throat while throwing darts. Korvo convulses in pain as blue blood shoots out of his wound. 

Terry directs Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) to get his voice-fixing ray. After one zap, Korvo is healed and now has a sexy, British accent. Jesse (Mary Mack) mentions that Korvo’s voice sounds weird and Yumyulack blames it on the ray being uncalibrated. He goes to fix it, but Terry stops him from making any repairs. “This is working for me,” he says, mystified by his partner’s new accent. 

Stevens also recorded over Roiland’s voice during the title sequence, during which Korvo says, “This is what my voice sounds like now, I don’t care if it’s jarring — get over it! And that voice-changer ray had chronitons in it, so this is what I’m going to sound like in flashbacks too. You got a problem with that? Tough shit, it’s called science.”

Well, that checks out for us.

In addition to Solar Opposites, Stevens has voiced characters in the animated works Central Park, Love, Death & Robots and The Sea Beast.

Following Roiland’s domestic violence charges, many others came forward with allegations of sexual harassment. In February, the Hollywood Reporter published an exposé with accounts from multiple staffers who alleged that Roiland would discuss his sex life with them and behave inappropriately. 

After the charges were dropped, Roiland said the accuser was an “embittered ex” trying to have him “canceled.” He added, “Now that the legal case has ended, I’m determined to move forward and focus both on my creative projects and restoring my good name.” Roiland does not have any new projects in development. 

As for Solar Opposites, the series will be continuing with a fifth season and a 2024 Valentine’s Day special.
