Beauty is pain — and oftentimes comes in pieces. On this morning’s pre-taped episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, Kelly Ripa explained why Mark Consuelos once dubbed her as the “human piñata” when they attended a fancy event. Also, it should be noted that any time you read the word “fancy,” it should be pronounced with an exaggerated British accent, as Ripa did on today’s show.

The conversation began as the longtime host told Ryan Seacrest, who was filling in for Consuelos, all about her previous experience with hair extensions. According to Ripa, she was forced to have them done when her hair got sucked into a hairdryer and had to get cut out.

“I liked it for the time I had them, I thought they were fun and it was great,” she said. “They were so seamless that even when I got them, Mark would run his fingers through my hair and he’s like, ‘You do not have hair extensions.'”

While it’s well-known that women are often paying the price of beauty, Ripa went on to speculate that “men probably have landmines to deal with that we don’t appreciate.” What does she mean by “landmines,” you ask? Well, she explained her first-hand experience to Seacrest.

“For me, like at the end of the night if Mark and I had gone someplace fancy — like, to some fancy party — at the end of the night, he used to call me the human piñata,” she said. “Because at the end of the night, there might be a wig on the floor and false eyelashes over here and the chicken cutlets would be over there.”

She continued, “It’s like a party favor. It’s like, all of the layers of what made me look glamorous, spill out onto the dock. Right? It’s just, like, spillage.”

Meanwhile, Ripa referred to Consuelos as “the little feller” just “sitting there all up in the corner” waiting for her to come to bed.
