After Amazon announced the cancellation of A League of Their Own on Friday (Aug. 18), co-showrunner Abbi Jacobson exposed the platform for how it handled the series striking out after only one season.

While the TV adaptation of the 1992 film that bears the same name was originally renewed for a shortened second season that would have consisted of four episodes in comparison to the eight episode-long Season 1, Amazon cited the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes for its termination, per Deadline.

Jacobson, who in addition to creating the show alongside Will Graham, starred as Rockford Peaches catcher Carson Shaw, took to Instagram on Friday to express the “luck” she has had to “tell these stories and play this character [she] love[s] so much.”

“What a rare thing in life,” she wrote. “And so I am sad today.”

She continued, “To blame this cancellation on the strike, (which is an essential fight for fair wages, protections and working conditions, etc…) is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today.”

She then transitioned to focus on “the special show [she] was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew.”

“A show I’m so proud of,” she added, “filled to the brim with stories worth telling. Full of so much heart and soul and value.”

She concluded her caption by thanking fans for watching, and doing a special shoutout “to the five. ❤️”

The League of Their Own series debuted on Prime Video in August 2022 and “ventured into territory that wouldn’t have been imagined 30 years ago,” per Decider’s Joel Keller. Themes of sexuality and race that were touched upon in Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the name starring Rosie O’Donnell and Tom Hanks were further highlighted in the new take.

Jacobson graciously fended off backlash to the new interpretation following its release last August, with the series getting review-bombed with homophobic comments.

“I have seen a lot of people angry and mad at our inclusion of more experiences (POC, QWOC, queer) and that anger (aka fear) has only made me more sure about why this reimagining needed to be made,” she penned on the official series’ X account, formerly known as Twitter. “Why representation matters so much.”
