A recent elimination round on Love Island USA took a tense turn when a contestant confronted host Sarah Hyland for a comment she made during elimination that some fans felt was standard for the show.

The recent episode saw contestant Keenan Anunay get voted off of the show, after which his partner Vickala “Kay Kay” Gray chose to eliminate herself because she felt like she found what she “came here for” in Anunay.

Hyland then asked if she felt sure that she wanted to leave the reality dating series.

“Before you go anywhere, I just want to make sure that you’re absolutely happy with your decision,” she said.

Gray replied, “No regrets.”

Contestant Mike Stark took issue with Hyland’s comment, however.

“Why are you saying it like that?” Stark asked after the surprise elimination. “It sounded mad disrespectful.”

Hyland appeared caught off guard by his reaction. “I’m being disrespectful?” she said, to which Stark replied, “Yeah.”

His fellow contestant Leonardo Dionicio swiftly apologized on Stark’s behalf, despite him doubling down on his remark.

“Sarah, I apologize for his reaction. I think it’s just the heat of the moment,” Dionicio whispered in her ear.

“Thank you,” she replied. “Boys will be boys.”

Fans of the show took to Twitter to defend the reality host. Some pointed out that, as host, it was Hyland’s job to make sure Gray was sure she wanted to leave the show.

“Mike calling Sarah Hyland disrespectful for doing her job is crazy. The way these men have been talking to her this season is NOT it. That would not fly on UK. Peacock should kick them off just for that,” one fan wrote.

Another noted, “Sarah Hyland literally just asked Kay Kay if she was sure of her decision because this is a tv show and there’s no going back. She said it in a totally normal way as a host would and Mike pipes up and says she’s being disrespectful???”

New episodes of Love Island USA premiere on Peacock on Thursday through Tuesday nights.
