Fans of Mark Millar know to hold their breath when it comes to television shows based on his work. The Netflix adaptations of Jupiter’s Legacy and Super Crooks each only have one season, with the latter being stuck in renewal hell. (It’s been two years, Netflix. Just make a choice!) Jupiter’s Legacy, on the other hand, got a quick cancellation despite its starry cast and epic world building. Will The Chosen One be any different?

The six-part fantasy drama follows 12-year-old Jodie (Bobby Luhnow) as he discovers that he has Jesus Christ-like powers. He lives with his protective mother who fled their hometown to keep him safe. As Jodie grows older, it becomes harder to shield him from his supernatural abilities. After he survives a dangerous car crash, a priest and an investigator take a keen interest in the young boy.

The cast features a fresh young cast, alongside Dianna Agron as Jodie’s mother Sarah, Tenoch Huerta as the noisy investigator, and Carlos Bardem as the Catholic priest. Check out our cast guide for information on who plays who in the series.

The Chosen One premiered August 16, 2023 on the streamer and quickly made its way to the top of the charts. At the time of reporting, the show is #3 in Netflix’s Top 10 Shows in the United States.

Unfortunately, Netflix has yet to renew The Chosen One for a second season. And given the show’s rough track record with Millar, we’re not sure if you should hold your breath. But, on the plus side, the series is getting stellar reviews and has a lot more source material to dive into.

The finale leaves off with Jodie being taken away by a demonic force after discovering that he is the son of Satan. While this may be obvious to fans of Millar’s graphic novel series – it’s not so clear to newcomers. The first season ends follows the trajectory of the first volume in the series and ends on a similar note, meaning that there’s still two more volumes to adapt.

The second volume, titled The New Messiah, introduces a new character Catalina. The synopsis reads that she “refuses to accept her destiny as the savior of mankind.” But eventually she does, as the third and final volume, Revelation, sees the Catalina and Jodie facing off with the woman being the embodiment of Jesus Christ. There are some epic time jumps between the volumes as by the third, Jodie is serving as the President of the United States and is plotting the “collapse of the global economy” and to incite public panic.

Netflix has a lot of material to work with if they decide to renew the popular show.

The Chosen One is currently streaming on Netflix.
