Euphoria creator Sam Levinson just gave us a major update on what to expect when Season 3 debuts.

In a recent Elle profile of the series’ up-and-coming star Zendaya, Levinson said he viewed Season 3 as a “film noir” that, through Zendaya’s character Rue, will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”

Now, a year and half out from the end of Season 2, there is still no confirmed release date for Season 3. Levinson reportedly already began writing the new season while working on The Idol, before the writers strike began.

HBO’s head of drama series and films Francesca Orsi said the release date for Euphoria Season 3 is “ideally in 2025,” per Deadline, but that they could not start shooting yet until they “pick back up with Sam, who at this point is all pencils down” because of the writers strike.

Considering SAG-AFTRA has since joined the writers on strike, and Zendaya has a packed schedule, there’s no telling when shooting will begin. But 2025 is far enough out that it is still feasible.

It has also been shared that Season 3 could possibly include a time jump. Euphoria costume designer Heidi Bivens revealed the new season could take place “five years in the future,” saying, “They’re not in high school anymore. Dorothy’s not in Kansas anymore.”

Considering Season 2’s explosive finale and the recent death of audience favorite Angus Cloud, there’s no telling how the Euphoria team will pick back up when it returns.

While speaking to Elle, Levinson also took a moment to praise the actress ahead of her next role in Luca Guadagnino‘s tennis drama Challengers. “She’s the most competitive person I know, in a good way,” he said. “She’s constantly growing as an artist and always seeking a challenge. She’s never complacent.”

Zendaya said her role in Challengers signals a next step in her career, shifting away from playing the high school-aged characters that helped cement her stardom.

“From a character perspective, I want to find things that will push me,” Zendaya said. “As I get older, you know, I can’t play a teenager for the rest of my life.”

While we wait for Euphoria to set a return date, you can catch Zendaya in Challengers, which will will release in theaters April 26, 2024.
