The View has gone to the dogs today. The daytime talk show weighed in on documents claiming that President Joe Biden‘s dog Commander has bitten  Secret Service members at least 10 times between last October and January.

Whoopi Goldberg could hardly get through the segment she was laughing so hard. After she gasped her way through the intro, she played a clip of White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre explaining that the Bidens are “working though ways to make this situation better for everyone.”

(Editor’s Note: The View is currently on hiatus; despite what you may have heard, The View was not canceled today. This article was originally published on July 26, 2023, when this episode first aired. The View will return with new episodes in September 2023.)

Goldberg continued to mock the news story, dramatically proclaiming, “It is not easy when you have a chomper, somebody who just, you’re walking by and they’re like, ‘Mmm… let me get a little taste of this!'”

She then joked, “He hasn’t bitten any Republicans, so I think y’all should be really glad.”

Joy Behar weighed in to suggest that Commander may behave differently if he had a more gentle name.

She told the panel, “They call the dog Commander, they call the other one Major,” referring to the Bidens’ other German Shepherd. “These are very bellicose, war-like type names … they need to name these dogs Fluffy, Sweetie Pie, and then the dog will calm down.”

Sunny Hostin suggested the Bidens could take in different types of dogs, mentioning her own Newfoundlands, Harlow and Finneus. But upon learning their names, Goldberg said Hostin’s dogs are probably “pissed off,” too.

Hostin brushed off the dig, explaining that German Shepherds like Commander are “meant to be protectors,” so the Bidens should get a calmer, less attentive breed, like a Cocker Spaniel.

When it was time for Alyssa Farah Griffin to give her two cents, she confidently described herself as “an expert” on the topic at hand, given her White House employee past and her childhood growing up with German Shepherds.

“They are the best, most loyal dogs, but they are protective,” she said, adding, “In the White House, in the residence, even where the President’s bedroom is, staff will take meetings right outside. There’s constantly foot traffic of just random people … [Commander] probably needs very special training.”

Behar closed out the segment with a nod to her own dog, Bernie, who has “lived such a charmed life.” As she told the panel that her dog will “let anybody touch him and pet him,” Goldberg cut in to correct the record.

“No, he won’t!” she exclaimed. But Behar insisted, “He’s a total slut, that dog,” before clarifying that Bernie isn’t too fond of Goldberg only “because she smells of cats” — but only because she has some of her own at home.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
