Matt Groening’s epic fantasy series finally comes to an end, but leaves no time to mourn. Disenchantment Part 5 offers an exciting and adventure-filled final installment as Queen Bean, Elfo and Luci continue their journey to save Dreamland. The Netflix hit picks up right where it left off. Queen Dagmar had just tossed Bean’s unconscious body into the ocean after discovering that she had killed her evil counterpart – a heartless act that left Satan himself clutching his chest. What comes next for the daring crew? Does Bean come back? The series’s return doesn’t hold back in getting straight to the jokes and the action, while also answering key questions for veteran viewers and continuing its twisty storyline.

DISENCHANTMENT, PART 5: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: The screen zooms in on Dreamland Castle and finds Queen Dagmar (Sharon Horgan) and Satan (Rich Fulcher) peering out the window that Bean (Abbi Jacobson) was hoisted out of. “Damn Dagmar, you murdered your own daughter by tossing her into the ocean,” Satan comments as the Queen walks around the room holding Evil Bean’s severed head by her hair. “You’re even more depraved than I thought.”

Meanwhile, Elfo (Nat Faxon) is spying on the two through the keyhole and tells Luci (Eric André), Miri (Lauren Tom), and Bunty (Lucy Montgomery) that Dagmar killed Bean, not knowing that Bean was rescued by her mermaid girlfriend Mora (Meredith Hagner), which viewers saw at the end of Part 4.

The Gist: Dreamland is still in trouble, Dagmar and Satan are still scheming, and Bean is nowhere to be found. With Bean’s confidants convinced that she’s dead, they take matters into their own hands after realizing that Dagmar wants to use Evil Bean’s dead body to unlock the magic of Dreamland. After overhearing Dagmar’s plans, the group decides to hide Evil Bean’s corpse in Elfo’s room. Refusing to back down, Dagmar goes on a quest to locate her dead daughter’s body. Meanwhile, Bean is getting busy with Mora, who tries to convince her to hide away, so they can live their lives together. Will Bean return to Dreamland and let everybody know she’s still alive? Will she continue her journey towards saving Dreamland? Or is everybody screwed with Dagmar and Satan as their new rulers?

Our Take: Disenchantment Part 5 is laugh-out-loud funny and sharper than ever. Through 10 twisty episodes, the show continues to offer new twists and turns for its beloved characters. Elfo, still not the sharpest tool in the shed, is forced to imagine a life without his close friend Bean, and leans on others to help guarantee that Evil Bean’s body doesn’t fall into the wrong, powerful hands. While the crew’s time away from their leader is brief, it reminds viewers that they are loyal and capable. Along with Bean, the lovable group is ready to dial things up a few notches to ensure their epic journey – which has, prior to this installment, unfolded over 40 episodes – comes to a rewarding end over the course of a short, 10-episode season.

As we reach the big finale, the characters are confident and consistent, the vast and magical world of Urth has been established, and a new relationship is being teased. It’s clear that Groening knows that now is the time for the unashamed fun to begin…

Sex and Skin: Disenchantment is getting hot and heavy! Bean and Mora have major sexytimes in the first episode. Not only do they smooch in the ocean, but they hook up in an underground cave. Clothes off, sultry pillow talk, the whole nine yards… just avoid thinking about the anatomy thing. Elfo and Miri also get into some hijinks. The two lock lips over Evil Bean’s corpse to hide it from Dagmar when she goes to investigate whether they’re hiding the body in Elfo’s room. Does that odd pairing turn into more? You’ll have to wait and see.

Parting Shot:  Bean is back, baby! The debut episode of the fifth and final installment ends with Elfo making an emotional confession to Evil Bean’s corpse. “I know you’re just a torso of the evil version of somebody I knew, but you’ll do,” the sensitive elf says. “You know what they never tell you about grief, Bean? Well, apart from the emotional eating. They never tell you that the worst part isn’t missing the past we had, it’s missing the future we’ll never get.” He continues, “I wasted so much time wanting you to be something else for me, I didn’t appreciate what you were: My friend. My best friend. I’m so sorry. From here on out, there’s gonna be a hole in the world where you’re supposed to be.”

Elfo sighs and turns away from Evil Bean’s body when he hears a familiar voice from behind say, “Oh, Elfo.” That’s right! It’s Bean. The fearless leader overheard Elfo’s confessional while crawling through the window of the castle that leads into his bedroom. Elfo runs to embrace Bean. The gang is back together!

Sleeper Star: First introduced in Season 2, Mora is a fun character to follow. Now, as Bean’s lover, she seemingly only wants the best for her, but she is really quick to suggest that Bean abandon her long journey to save Dreamland and her friends to live an underground life of “freedom” with her. Did love blind her or does she not know Bean as well as we were led to believe? Bean’s incredible character development from a self-obsessed, fumbling alcoholic to the brave and protective hero that she is now was all due to her journey, and she can’t give up now! We’re intrigued to see where Mora’s storyline goes.

Most Pilot-y Line:  “Sitting around won’t help anybody. I know you’re sad. I’m sad, Bunty’s sad, Luci’s… Something, but Bean died trying to save Dreamland and we have to finish what she started,” Miri says to encourage her friends to not give up after they hear Dagmar say that Bean is dead.

Our Call: STREAM IT! Disenchantment is coming to an epic end and Part 5 teases answers to the many questions that have been plaguing the fandom throughout the previous installments. With Bean, Elfo, and Luci newly reunited after the faked death, they have a new understanding of their friendship and what’s at stake, especially Bean who was forced to reckon with the aftermath of her mother “killing” her and the “what could be” of her future with Mora. The show remains hilarious, ambitious, and binge-worthy as it carries itself to the finish line.
