Maya Hawke‘s family isn’t your average family. The Stranger Things star — who is the daughter of Hollywood legends Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman — is opening up about the dynamic within her famous bloodline.

“We’re like the boring, indie Kardashians,” Maya joked in a joint Variety interview with her father — with whom she was promoting their new movie, Wildcat.

Ethan and Thurman met on the set of the sci-fi film Gattaca in 1996. After just a couple of short years, they got married and welcomed their daughter, Maya, before having their son, Levon Hawke, in 2002. The ex-lovers ultimately announced their separation in 2003 and officially divorced in 2005.

Maya, now 25, is currently following in her parents’ footsteps. After becoming a beloved Gen Z actress for her work on Stranger Things and Do Revenge, she is now basking in the release of her new, indie biographical drama, Wildcat, which she filmed with her iconic dad.

The movie — which stars Maya as American novelist Flannery O’Connor and puts her in a producer role — is directed by Ethan. We know what you may be thinking: nepotism! Despite this, the Dead Poets Society star is unbothered by the criticism.

“Put simply, I’m a nepo dad!” Ethan declared. “And I’m not embarrassed about it.”

Meanwhile, Maya admitted to having “moments of insecurity” about nepotism while they were shooting the film.

“But the internet doesn’t have a lot of nuances. My dad has been a massive teacher for me, and we want to work together. We like being with each other,” she said, to which Ethan added, “If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s totally fair. You have to let people have their opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you’re onstage.”

According to the actress, people kept asking her if she was nervous about working with her dad before they started. However, she explained that she “hadn’t thought to be.” With Ethan getting asked the same question, they both agreed that “making art together” put them in their “safe space.”

“I mean, Thanksgiving?” Ethan quipped. “That’s not so safe.”
