Humanity has done little to prove itself worthy of saving, at least to the gods. In Netflix’s Record of Ragnarok, the gods remain tired of dealing with the species’ constant misdeeds. One day, they make the decision to eliminate every human being on Earth. But when one valkyrie named Brunhilde (Laura Post) makes the decision that humanity should have a fighting change for survival, a massive battle ensues: Ragnarok. That means 13 of humanity’s strongest fighters must duke it out with the gods themselves to see if they’ll be allowed to live. And the battle is still ongoing. Who will end up taking home the win, and will humanity be destroyed after all? We’re a long way out from an answer, but luckily this season is more than entertaining enough to keep you engaged while you find out.

RECORD OF RAGNAROK, SEASON 2 PART 2: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: The room is filled with some of the humans and god contestants. Jack the Ripper (Jeff Leach) is sipping from a cup of tea, saying he finds Darjeeling “quite calming.” This irritates Ebisu (Andrew Kishino), of one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, who insists he’ll only drink green tea.

The Gist: The second half of Record of Ragnarok‘s second season has been a long time coming. The first half of the season ended on a cliffhanger, and this new set of episodes picks up where the previous set left off. Buddha (Maaz Ali) is the next fighter to fight on the side of humanity. Despite originally battling on the side of the gods, he’s changed his mind, and he’s going to help humanity flourish, lending his assistance since he seems to be the only one who will. However, he’s tied with the gods — so there’s plenty on the line.

This second collection of episodes also gives viewers a look at more of the relationship between two important characters: Buddha and Zerofuku (Meli Grant), the God of Misfortune, who’s part of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune.

Buddha is the most provocative character we’ve seen in the series yet, and he’s all about remaining emotionless but steely. Seeing the way he interacts with Zerofuku makes for some tense viewing, especially when it comes to how differently the pair live their lives.

While there are only five episodes in this new drop, watching the pair’s differences come to light and how they interact in and out of battle makes for an engaging set of 20-minute sagas, and a good cap for the rest of the season.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? There are several similarities on offer here, many of which can be made to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in terms of animation and art style, and the grandeur of some of the characters. In terms of what actually goes down, however, the series can be likened to lengthy epics like The Seven Deadly Sins.

Our Take: With the beginning of Round Six of the battle between humanity and the gods, Buddha’s defect makes for prime viewing. The lead-up to the big contest of the season is an intriguing one, especially when you consider how all of the other battles have gone in the previous episodes.

And it truly comes as a surprise when it happens that Buddha is no longer on the side of the immortals, which ramps things up considerably. The human spectators had no idea, and think they’re in for a truly devastating loss. But when he makes his declaration that he’s changed sides, it’s a unique moment that hasn’t been matched elsewhere in the series yet.

With this major revelation, it elevates Record of Ragnarok from a slightly predictable action series to a must-watch that proves it has secrets around every corner. And this part has more than the previous season, by far. You’ll end up being more than a little obsessed by the end of it all, and that’s a good thing.

Sex and Skin: None in these episodes as the focus is solely on which contender will end up becoming the victor as the battle for humanity rages on.

Parting Shot: It’s revealed that Zerofuku is the true form of the aforementioned seven gods, and Brunhilde and sister Goll (Anairis Quinones) converse about his origins. He’ll bring “divine punishment” to those who stand against him.

Sleeper Star: Buddha is in no way a sleeper star in the scheme of things, but Maaz Ali gives him such an incredible amount of swagger it’s impossible to ignore what kind of influence his voice has on the character as a whole.

Most Pilot-y Line: “I’m gonna be fighting for the humans, thanks,” Buddha murmurs nonchalantly minutes after he walks out. No one can believe what he’s just said ane he’s immediately labeled a traitor. He tells the crowds to “shut the hell up”, adding that if the gods won’t save mankind, he will.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Record of Ragnarok: Season 2 Part 2 is every bit as exciting as the first set of episodes before it. It’s an action-packed blend of exciting combat between literal gods and humanity, mixed with great-looking animation, high stakes, and plenty of reasons to come back after you devour each episode. If you invested in the previous episodes, these offer a great reason to come back.
