Miley Cyrus Says Decision to Divorce Liam Hemsworth Came From Place of “Love” and “Trauma”

Miley Cyrus is peeling back the curtain on her decision to end her 10-year relationship with Liam Hemsworth. In the latest installment of her “Used to Be Young” TikTok series, the famed singer revealed exactly when and where she was when she came to the conclusion that things weren’t going to work out between her and her ex.

“I just want to slow down. I have to slow down because this is, like, actually serious,” she began at the start of the clip.

Cyrus and Hemsworth initially sparked their romance in 2009 after meeting on the set of The Last Song — a movie in which they played love interests. Their relationship was on and off until they officially tied the knot in December 2018 — less than a year before Cyrus announced their separation and Hemsworth subsequently filed for divorce.

According to the star — whose recent videos have found her opening up about working through tragedy — she was about to play at the Glastonbury Music Festival for the first time in June 2019 when she decided to end her marriage to the actor.

“Glastonbury was in June, which was when the decision had been made that me and Liam’s commitment to being married just really came from, of course, a place of love first because we had been together for 10 years but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could,” she said.

Cyrus continued, “The day of the show was the day that I had decided that it was no longer going to work in my life — to be in that relationship. So that was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first. And I guess that’s why it’s now so important to me for that to not be the case — that the human comes first.”

Despite things not working out between the two, Cyrus has looked back on their lengthy romance fondly. In Part 20 of her “Used to Be Young” TikTok series, she opened up about why she thinks The Last Song has struck a chord with so many fans.

“I think one of the elements that made that movie feel so special was [that] it was watching two very young people fall in love with each other — which was happening in real-time and in real life,” she said. “So the chemistry was undeniable. And that was the beginning of a long, 10-year relationship.”
