Jamie Foxx has, thankfully, come out of the other side of his health scare, and now the actor is back in action in The Burial, a new Amazon movie coming to the streaming service next month.

Directed by Maggie Betts (Novitiate), with a screenplay by Betts and Doug Wright, The Burial is based on the true story of a 1995 lawsuit. Foxx stars as the smooth-talking personal injury lawyer, while Tommy Lee Jones stars as his embittered, disgruntled client. Also starring Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie, and Bill Camp, The Burial promises all the ups and downs of a riveting court room drama.

What is the new Jamie Foxx movie The Burial about?

The Burial is based on the true story of an American lawyer named Willie E. Gary (played by Jamie Foxx) and his client, Jeremiah Joseph O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones). In 1995, O’Keefe was a struggling funeral home owner in Florida, who sued a funeral company, the Loewen funeral company, over a breach of contract. Gary won the case for his client, and O’Keefe was awarded $500 million in punitive damages. Doesn’t that sound exciting?

You’d be surprised. The script for The Burial was adapted from the 1999 New Yorker article of the same name by Jonathan Harr. The Loewen Funeral Company filed for bankruptcy after the case, and it became a landmark lawsuit case. This one’s for the legal nerds!

The Burial movie release date:

The Burial will be released in select theaters on Friday, October 6, and will be released on streaming, on Amazon Prime, one week later, on Friday, October 13.

Beginning on Friday, October 13, you’ll be able to watch The Burial online streaming on Amazon Prime. The movie will be free to anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription.
