Hulu‘s got something new up their sleeve — which is now on your screen!
According to Vulture, the streaming service is establishing a “Top 15 Today” list, which viewers now have access to as of today.
Insiders told the outlet that the list is its own spin on a most-watched titles list, as seen on other streamers such as Netflix. Prior to Hulu’s announcement today, Max was the most recent streaming service to launch its unique take on a most watched list in the form of “Top 10 Movies” and “Top 10 Series” lists, per Variety.
Factors that reportedly influence the film and movie titles on the list are how many people start playing the title — meaning that they watch at least two minutes of the movie or show — and its popularity overall.
The list will give subscribers another way of finding new content to enjoy outside of the streaming service’s existing themed collections and algorithm.
According to a press release from the Walt Disney Company, which owns Hulu, the “Top 25 Today” list will be “updated daily between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. PT.” The company also notes that “views (which are defined as ‘total stream time divided by runtime available’) are a component of the Top 15 Today formula but it’s not the sole determining factor.”
“Ultimately, the intent of the ‘Top 15’ is to show what is trending on Hulu during a particular time frame,” the release adds.
The release also notes that the “equation” of the Top 15 Today” is “made up of total views at the episode level within a 24-hour period and considers the growing popularity of new shows/movies released during that time frame.”
The top three programs currently featured on the list are led by Hulu Original Only Murders in the Building, followed by FX’s Welcome to Wrexham and The Other Black Girl , another new Hulu original series. Films that currently hold a spot on the coveted ranking include The Intern, Mad Max: Fury Road, and three of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Hulu customers should note that there is no “Top 15 Today” list visible on kids profiles.
