Will There Be a ‘Dear Child’ Season 2 on Netflix?

Netflix‘s sneaky hit series Dear Child premiered to major success on the streaming giant, reaching Top 10 in 84 countries. So, what’s next? Will there be a second season?

The German limited series focuses on a missing persons case that is reopened after 13 years, when a woman, called Lena, is found fleeing from her captor. When Lena is reunited with her parents at the hospital, it becomes obvious that everything is not as it seems.

Over time, it is revealed that “Lena” is actually a different kidnapped woman, Jasmin Grass (Riedle), who was forced to identify as “Lena” by her abductor and raise two young children.

Decider’s Joel Keller praised the show in his review, writing, “Dear Child presents its audience with a confounding puzzle and fragmented perspectives, but in a way that draws viewers in instead of ticking them off, which happens less often than you might think.”

Based on a novel by Romy Hausmann, the six-part series is directed and written by Isabel Kleefeld and Julian Pörksen, and stars Kim Riedle, Naila Schuberth, Sammy Schrein, Hans Löw, and Christian Beermann.

Will There Be A Dear Child Season 2? 

Unfortunately, as of now, Netflix has not renewed Dear Child for a second season. Given that the series is based on Hausmann’s book, it should be noted that the series spanned the entirety of the novel. Hausmann has not published a sequel to her successful book, though she went on to pen a second thriller titled Sleepless.

Even though the Netflix series spanned the entirety of Hausmann’s novel, it is not unheard of for adaptations to continue beyond their source material. More recently, the Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers — based on a novel — was renewed for a second season, despite the original story reaching a conclusive ending that aligned with its source material, despite its many differences.

Though Dear Child reached a concrete ending for all the characters, q potential second season could see the show following the characters at a later time in their recovery from the traumatizing abduction, but that’s just speculation.

Hausmann commented on the differences between her novel and the series, in an interview with Netflix. “I hope my readers feel like I did: There will be many things that are familiar from the book, and at the same time it will feel totally new,” the author shared. “There also is, for example, a new character, who really excited me because she lives the complete opposite of the perpetrator’s imagination. It’s subtle and incredibly well told. Why didn’t I think of that?”

All said, Dear Child has not yet been renewed for Season 2, but there is still hope! The show premiered to major success on the streamer and has already proven its capability to insert original plot points into Hausmann’s story.
