Hillary Clinton Edges Closer To EGOT Status With Emmy Win For Netflix Documentary ‘In Her Hands’

Hillary Clinton just won an Emmy, and with her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, no less!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the former secretary of state and her kin received an Emmy in the “Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary” category for In Her Hands at the 44th News and Documentary Emmy Awards on Thursday night (Sept. 28).

The documentary follows Zarifa Ghafari, who became Afghanistan’s youngest female mayor at age 26, and it began filming in 2020 and continued into the 2021 Taliban takeover.

Neither Hillary nor Chelsea were in attendance at Thursday night’s awards ceremony, but the head of the News & Documentary Awards for The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, David Winn, confirmed to the outlet that the two were “considered statue eligible” for their roles as executive producers on the film.

Other documentaries they were up against included  A Radical Life from Discovery+, Watergate: High Crimes in the White House from CBS, and both Apart and Not Going Quietly from PBS.

The documentary received criticism from various outlets after its Sept. 2022 release surrounding the privilege associated with the Clintons taking on this project, including The New York Times noting that “at points” its “lack of context is not just sloppy but irresponsible,” and that its “sanded edges only do a disservice to a complex, courageous young woman faced with unimaginable choices.”

Hillary retweeted THR‘s coverage on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter), captioning her post, “We just won an Emmy!”

She continued, “I’m thrilled that In Her Hands, @HiddenLightPrd’s documentary telling the story of Zarifa Ghafari, Afghanistan’s youngest female mayor, has been recognized in the news and documentary category.”

In Her Hands is streaming on Netflix.
