Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos‘ relationship wasn’t always smooth sailing. On this morning’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, the married couple looked back on the time they briefly split up before officially tying the knot.

During the opening chat, Ripa recalled how much they “detested” each other when they had to appear on a 1996 episode of Live with Regis and Kathie Lee — which is now the show that the married couple hosts themselves.

“I remember when you and I were here back when it was Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. And you and I were broken up — we were not speaking to each other,” she said. “And we had to do a segment on this show together even though we detested one another — detested!”

According to Ripa, her disdain for her then-ex-boyfriend only grew when he waltzed in with an expensive cup of coffee “from this place called Starbucks.”

“I was like, ‘Of course, he’s so bougie. He thinks he’s so fancy,'” Ripa said. “I think at the time you paid $1.99 for that coffee and I was like, ‘What a waste!’ In my mind I’m like, ‘He’s such a wasteful person. I’m glad we’re broken up!'”

When she asked Consuelos if he remembered that, he confirmed that he did — except he “didn’t hear [her] thought bubbles.” Still, he knew “it wasn’t good.”

This isn’t the first time the co-hosting duo has dished about their short-lived breakup. While neither of them has ever revealed the reason behind the temporary split, Consuelos opened up about how he won Ripa back on an episode of Watch What Happens Live.

“We both had to meet and do an appearance on Live With Regis and Kathie Lee,” he told host Andy Cohen“When we were together, she wouldn’t talk to me, and that made me go crazy. So I followed her in Central Park, and then we went back to my place, and we got married the next day.”

Ripa had a similar recollection of events while speaking on a 2018 episode of the Comments by Celebs podcast, per Entertainment Weekly.

“We broke up and we got back together the day before we went off and eloped,” she said. “Yeah, we eloped. We went to Vegas and got married.”

Twenty-seven years, three children, and a shared morning talk show later, they are still going strong!
