Much like Legally Blonde‘s Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon was always an ambitious young lady.

Witherspoon joined Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Tuesday’s (Oct. 3) episode of Today to discuss her upcoming children’s book, Busy Betty & The Circus Surprise, which she says was inspired by her own childhood.

After Bush Hager joked that Witherspoon most likely predicted that she was always going to be “a famous movie star” when she grew up, the actress clarified that she actually had other aspirations when she was younger.

“I was determined. Actually, in second grade, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up and I was like, I’m going to be the first female president of the United States, of course,'” Witherspoon said.

Bush Hager urged her to hold out hope. “Well, it’s not too late, Reese!” she replied.

Witherspoon was not as optimistic about the possibility, however.

“It’s not too late, but I’ve heard a lot about it,” the actress said, then told Bush Hager, “Maybe you can give me some tips, I think it’s harder than it looks.” Both Bush Hager’s father and grandfather have served as the president of the United States.

Instead of becoming the first female president of the United States, Witherspoon has become an industry multi-hyphenate. She’s written her own children’s series while simultaneously starring in The Morning Show and leading her own production company.

But she’s always had that level of initiative, apparently. The actress explained Busy Betty was inspired by the businesses she used to pretend to set up when she would play in her backyard as a young girl, from selling barrettes to selling cookies.

“By the way, I was really into selling Girl Scout cookies as you can imagine,” she proudly told Kotb and Bush Hager. “I was the top seller of Troupe 1077.”

Witherspoon can be seen in The Morning Show, which is now streaming on Apple TV+. New episodes air weekly on Wednesdays.

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
