Beckham, the new Netflix docuseries following soccer star David Beckham, also shines a spotlight on his relationship with wife and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, leading all the way back to when the two met in 1997. The docuseries reveals that not everything was sunshine and rainbows for the posh power couple.

According to Today.com, in 2004, rumors swirled around David’s alleged affair with his personal assistant Rebecca Loos following his transfer to Real Madrid the year before.

Victoria, who married David in 1999, opened up about the backlash and excessive measures the press took to follow the couple.

“It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us,” she shared in the new docuseries, per Today. “Here’s the thing – we were against each other if I’m completely honest.”

She noted that “up until Madrid,  sometimes it felt like us against everybody else.”

“But we were together, we were connected, we had each other. But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad. I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me.”

David also weighed in on the rumors, noting that there were “some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with,” per Today.

“It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage,” he explained. “I think we both felt at the time that we were, not losing each other, but drowning. I don’t know how we got through it, in all honesty.”

He continued, “Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters, and at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for.”

According to BBC News, some outlets such as The Independent critiqued the docuseries for not fleshing out too many details about the truth of the affair claims. However, the docuseries directed by Fisher Stevens still garnered positive reviews, such as The Guardian describing it as “the candid, riveting truth about [David Beckham’s] life.”

Beckham is now streaming on Netflix.
