A couple’s world as they know it is about to turn upside down in Netflix‘s upcoming apocalyptic thriller Leave The World Behind.

The trailer for Sam Esmail‘s film based on Rumaan Alam‘s 2020 novel of the same title stars Julia Roberts as Amanda Sanford and Ethan Hawke as her husband Clay Sanford.

While the couple is on a weekend vacation with their children Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie), two strangers — G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Rose (Myha’la Herrold) — knock on their door one night with some terrifying news: peculiar cyberattacks are consuming the nation.

According to Netflix’s synopsis, “the two families reckon with [the] looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.”

Throughout the trailer, viewers are met with haunting scenes of the two families coming to terms with their new reality. Or, as G.H. sums up, “there is no going back to normal.”

“The truth is much scarier,” G.H. says, but Amanda asks, “What is the truth?”

The events provoke terrifying questions, such as Rose asking her father, “Aren’t you the one who always said, ‘If you’re not paranoid by now, it’s too late?'”

Kevin Bacon, who also stars in the film as Danny, asks, “Haven’t you been picking up on what’s going on out there? We’ve all been deserted.”

Alam serves as an executive producer of the film, alongside Barack and Michelle Obama, Tonia Davis, Daniel M. Stillman and Nick Krishnamurthy.
