David Beckham called his wife Victoria Beckham‘s bluff in the new Netflix docuseries Beckham.

In the first episode of the four-part docuseries, titled “Kick,” David and Victoria recalled how they met at one of David’s game in March 1997, noting that they both “fancied” each other.

“The fact I went to the games really was just to kind of… some would say ‘stalk’ him, I would say ‘see’ him,” Victoria revealed, per Variety.

She continued, “When I saw him in the footballers’ lounge, all the other footballers were at the bar, but he was standing, talking to his parents.”

The former Spice Girl highlighted that she’s “very close to her family,” and thus “loved that side to him.”

“I think also we both come from families that work really hard,” she said. “Both of our parents work very hard, we’re very working class.”

“Be honest,” David interjected from off-screen.

“I am being honest,” Victoria insisted.

After David continued urging her to tell the truth — which Victoria claimed was “not a simple answer” — David asked her, “”What car did you get your dad to drive you to school in?”

She admitted, “In the 80s, my dad had a Rolls-Royce.”

Nonetheless, the origins of their love story do feel like they came out of a fairy tale. David recalled watching the Spice Girls on TV, pointing at Victoria’s Posh Spice and telling his friend and former footballer Gary Neville , “See that one there? I’m gonna marry that one,” specifying “the Posh one” and “the one in the black dress.”

“I suppose that most blokes have done that in their life,” Gary explained. “Looked at a television and said, ‘I like her.’ You don’t fucking end up with them.”

They have still dealt with plenty of controversy, which director Fisher Stevens described as “constant” to Variety.

“It hasn’t all been rosy with [David’s] relationship with Victoria,” Stevens told the outlet. “Frankly, I was quite moved by their relationship at the end of the day, and — after all they’ve been through — how much they love each other, and how close they are.”

Beckham is now streaming on Netflix.
