Pete Davidson will finally get his chance to host Saturday Night Live this coming Saturday now that the WGA strike has reached a resolution. But, his means of getting the job were a bit questionable, according to the show’s first promo.

In a newly released trailer teasing the show’s return, cast members Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman are seen strolling through the Saturday Night Live studio at 30 Rock as they catch up on what they’ve been up to since they’ve been away during the show’s hiatus. But they soon realize there are some Saturday Night Live stars who never even left. Namely, Davidson himself, who reveals he’s been living there for some time.

“My apartment’s under construction, so I’m just living here,” he said nonchalantly while snacking on some potato chips.

“Only cast or hosts are allowed in the studio,” Fineman explained in reponse.

“Oh okay, I’ll do that,” he said. “The host thing — I’ll host.”

“Pete, that’s not how it works. You can’t just say you’re hosting,” Fineman responds. Too late!

Rather than responding, Davidson instead gave his best Kenan Thompson impression to the camera.

Saturday marks Davidson’s first time returning to the comedy show since he left the cast in 2022. He was initially scheduled to host in May alongside musical guest Lil Uzi Vert, but it was canceled due to the WGA strike. Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Saturday Night Live is allowed to return under the guild’s “Network Code Agreement.”

Davidson joked at the time that he was well aware that the show may be canceled, even though he had spent “months” preparing.

“It’s funny, Lorne [Michaels] told me a couple months ago, but this week, a writers strike might happen,” he told Jimmy Fallon during a late night appearance in May. “So I’ve been working on this for two, three months and they’re like, ‘Yeah, we’ll know Monday if it’s happening or not.’”

He joked, “It sucks because it just feeds my weird story I have in my head like, ‘Of course that would happen to me. They didn’t want me to host it. It’s all about me!’

Saturday’s episode will likely be a triumphant return for the show.

Davidson’s hosting debut will be swiftly followed by Bad Bunny, who will host and perform the following week on Oct. 21.
