Jada Pinkett Smith Gives Update On Where She Stands With Will Smith After Separation Bombshell On ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’: “We’re Staying Together Forever”
It’s official: the Smiths are getting back together! Jada Pinkett Smith joined Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Today With Hoda & Jenna this morning to settle the gossip that has had the internet in shambles since she recently revealed she and Will Smith were secretly separated for seven years.
During her Tuesday appearance, she clarified that she and her husband were working on rebuilding their relationship and plan to eventually move back in together.
“We’re in the most beautiful place. I will never leave Will’s side. Ever,” she said. “But, just like I explained to you yesterday, I’m not putting it in that box, I worked so hard to dismantle all the romanticism, and I just want to love Will as he is. I don’t want to put him in any boxes, and I don’t want to be put in a box. And, let me tell you, it’s been beautiful.”
They were married for almost 20 years by the time they separated. But, Pinkett Smith said, they’re now prepared to build their relationship back up into “something new.”
Pinkett Smith opened up to Kotb and Bush Hager about the internal work she did over those seven years, during which she claimed she only had one relationship (likely that public “entanglement” she had with singer August Alsina) because she wanted to focus on herself. But that was made possible in part by keeping their separation private, which she said gave “us privacy so we could figure it out.”
“Because here we are, solid as a rock, and people are still confused,” she added. “Now imagine that we were in limbo, not stabilized, both trying to figure stuff out. And to give that to the world, and have to take all the pressure? We’re not trying to do all of that.”
She also disagreed when Bush Hager suggested that she and Smith had been pretending all those years while in the public eye.
“We have to be careful with ‘pretending’ because Will and I love each other, and so all the love you guys have seen, that’s real, there’s no pretending there,” she said.
Though she’s caught some flack for the way she’s candidly discussed her relationship with Smith and her family, she said her kids are proud of her.
“They’re so proud of me,” she said. “They’ve been living this life with us, so they’re so happy.”
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
