Netflix just released the first full trailer for Leave the World Behind, a psychological drama that offers a new take on the apocalyptic thriller in the digital age.

This is one star-studded book adaptation, even for Netflix. Julia Roberts stars as Amanda Sanford, a wife who books a spontaneous beach trip to Long Island for her family. But just as she and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) are settling in at their luxury rental, two strangers show up at their door claiming it’s their home. Mahershala Ali and Myha’la star as the mysterious G.H. and Ruth Scott, who clue the Sanfords into the blackout that has swept the city since they’ve been isolated. Plus, Kevin Bacon even makes an appearance!

The two families are forced to live with each other when a cyberattack strikes the nation, causing societal collapse.

But will they be able to trust each other? Or, at the very least, believe each other?

The trailer shows how the thriller teeters between a true apocalyptic horror and a dystopian thriller as we see the characters try to fight their way out of Long Island. Though the trailer teases the true stakes of this dystopian story, it drives it home with truly terrifying moments like Amanda racing against oncoming traffic and a ship crashing onto a public beach.

Leave the World Behind was adapted for the big screen by director Sam Esmail, who previously served as an executive producer and showrunner on Mr. Robot. The story is adapted from the bestselling novel by Rumaan Alam, which was named a National Book Award finalist when it was published in 2020.

Alam is attached as an executive producer on the film, alongside Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.

When does Leave the World Behind premiere on Netflix?

Unlike most Netflix originals, this star-studded epic will premiere in theaters first on Nov. 22 before it lands on the streaming platform Dec. 8.
