Yesterday Saturday Night Live honored the late 54-year-old actor Matthew Perry with a tribute card right before host Nate Bargatze bid his goodnights. Perry, whose death was first reported yesterday mere hours before the latest SNL began, hosted his own episode of the hit NBC sketch comedy series with musical guest Oasis on October 4, 1997.

When Perry appeared on SNL‘s 23rd season, he delighted fans with his trademark comedic timing, charm, and of course, sarcasm. In fact, his sarcasm skills were so strong, the show even had him give a crash course to the cast in a sketch called “Sarcasm 101.”

Surrounded by comedic talents like Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Tim Meadows, Cheri Oteri, and the late Norm Macdonald (who was quite a king of sarcasm in his own right), Perry shone as he showcased the dry humor for which we remember him.

Perry is best known for his work as Chandler Bing in the beloved NBC sitcom Friends (which was also parodied on his SNL hosting gig). His additional roles in Fools Rush In, Almost Heroes, 17 Again, and more give him an enduring legacy as a comedic actor who brought warmth and wit to every part he played.
