Seth Meyers has nothing but praise for Taylor Swift. Speaking with Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show, the Saturday Night Live alum and current Late Night host recalled when Swift hosted the hit NBC comedy show in 2009.

Those who watched may remember her memorable and musical monologue, which she delivered in the form of “Monologue Song (La La La),” which Meyers revealed she wrote herself.

“It really speaks to what a force of nature she is and the depths of her talent,” he said. “Here’s a 19-year-old who nobody is really helping out; nobody gave her a manual of how to do that show. And yet, she came to us and said, ‘I wrote a song for the opening monologue.'”

He explained how they brought the pop star into SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels‘ office, where she performed the number.

“She sings this song, which is not only a beautiful song by a beautiful singer, it’s a perfect SNL monologue,” he continued. “Fully formed.”

The number masterfully played into Swift’s love life, quipping that she was “dating the werewolf from Twilight (Taylor Lautner),” and took a jab at Kanye West, who stormed the stage when “You Belong With Me” won Swift a VMA for “Best Female Video” against Beyoncé‘s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).”

Meyers likened the experience to when “someone brings you a fully gift-wrapped present and it’s exactly what you need it to be.

“When she finished I should’ve said, ‘Now Taylor, just for you, I want to look at you and read what we had written for you just so you know how much fucking worse it was,'” he shared. “‘Not only is your song great, but you cannot even begin to imagine how shitty what we were doing for you is compared to how great what you did for yourself is.'”

Swift’s skills outside of songwriting have been all the buzz recently; before Meyers commended her SNL work, director Shawn Levy applauded her choices as director of All Too Well: The Short Film, which premiered in 2022. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he even went so far as to compare her work to that of Steven Spielberg, and deemed her a “generational voice and creative force.”

“Taylor has not consulted me about upcoming directing projects, but I think she has the makings of a hell of a director,” he told the outlet.
