Euphoria fans will have to wait a bit longer for the return of Rue. The drama won’t be returning for its upcoming Season 3 until 2025, a whole three years after its sophomore season, says HBO CEO Casey Bloys. According to Deadline, the network exec broke the news this morning at HBO’s programming presentation, held at their headquarters in New York City.

In an Elle profile of series star Zendaya published in August, Euphoria series creator Sam Levinson teased the show’s third season as “film noir,” which he said aims to “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world” through Zendaya’s Rue.

A lot has taken place off-screen since Euphoria was renewed for Season 3 in February 2022. Most recently, the show’s cast suffered a major loss following the tragic passing of Angus Cloud, who played the lovable Fez. Cloud died in July at age 25 from an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Just a few months after the show was renewed for a third season, Barbie Ferreira, who portrayed Kat Hernandez, exited the show in August 2022 following alleged drama with Levinson.

“After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary eyed goodbye,” she wrote in a post to her Instagram Stories at the time. “I  hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today. I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you Katherine Hernandez.”

Ferreira told Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast in April that while she thought “there were places [her role] could have gone,” she felt it was ultimately “a good thing” for her to have left the HBO drama, claiming that she may have “overstayed [her] welcome a little bit.”

Euphoria is now streaming on Max.
