‘Prison Break’ Revival In Development At Hulu From ‘Mayans M.C.’ Showrunner Elgin James

A revival of the hit series Prison Break is currently in the works at Hulu.

According to Deadline, a new installment of the Fox crime drama is in early development by Mayans M.C. co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Elgin James who will write and executive produce.

James is operating under his Sierra Drive banner as part of his overall deal with 20th Television. The series will be his first project since the conclusion of the hit Sons of Anarchy spinoff on FX.

The forthcoming installment is being described as a new chapter set in the Prison Break world that will not involve the original characters Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell).

The original Prison Break, which debuted in 2005, was produced by Disney Television Studios which will serve as the studio on the new project. In addition to James, Prison Break creator/executive producer Paul Scheuring and the original series’ executive producers Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz will executive produce.

In the first iteration of Prison Break, Michael Scofield (Miller) concocts an elaborate plan to break his brother Lincoln Burrows (Purcell) out of jail and prove his innocence, before he receives the death penalty.

Also starring in the series was Amaury Nolasco, Sarah Wayne Callies, Paul Adelstein, Rockmond Dunbar, Inbar Lavi, Mark Feuerstein, Robert Knepper and Augustus Prew.

Prison Break aired on Fox for four seasons followed by a made-for-TV film titled The Final Break, which aired 12 days after the Season 4 finale in 2009. In 2015, a sequel limited series starring Miller and Purcell, which served as a fifth season, also aired on Fox.

Fox had explored making another installment of Prison Break for the next couple of years but nothing ever came of it. Since Disney acquired 20th Television in 2019 and Hulu is the current streaming home of all four seasons of the original show, it was likely for the revival to land at the platform.

Miller announced in 2020 that he, as a gay man, was done playing heterosexual characters including Michael Scofield on Prison Break.
