Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb were joined by a special guest during Tuesday’s (Nov. 7) episode of Today: Jenna’s own twin sister, Barbara Bush.

She briefly joined them during the broadcast for a sisters edition of their favorite segment, Girl Code, in which they advise women on how to navigate social situations with their loved ones. But one question in particular stirred up some old feelings for the sisters.

Jenna read the question aloud to Kotb and her sister: “My sister told me she has a crush on a guy. He just asked me out. What do I do?”

They gasped in response. Kotb said, “Did that happen to you guys?”

Jenna made it clear that these questions were not from them. “We never had the same tastes,” she told Kotb. “Except, in the seventh grade, we both liked the same person for a brief moment.”

Barbara was quick to set the record straight. “Well, he liked me,” she responded flatly, before later adding, “And then you liked him.”

Jenna replied, “I don’t think he liked you first,” but Barbara appeared to remember things differently, saying, “Yes, he did. He told me I was cute and in seventh grade if a boy tells you you’re cute…”

The awkward squabble did not end there.

“But then why did he not ask you, he asked me out?” Jenna asked her sister, to which she responded, “Because then he liked you.”

As quickly as it started, the tense moment passed as the sisters moved onto the next Girl Code question. It’s not often that two sisters get to unearth the decades-old beef they’ve had while on air like it’s an episode of The Kardashians.

Barbara joined the Today hosts to celebrate the release of the book she co-wrote with Jenna, Love Comes First, that hit the stands today. Jenna recently opened up on Today about why she believes she and her sister have remained so close all these years. While speaking to Kotb during a recent broadcast, she credited her parents.

“I actually think they gave us independence because, I think with twins in particular, the world kind of compares you,” she said.

She added, “The teachers will be like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s the one that’s real good at math,’ like we heard that a lot as little kids.” She explained that her parents helped them stay close “by giving us our own identity and letting us do our own thing.”

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
