Actress Lauren London joined Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager for an emotional discussion about grief during Wednesday’s (Nov. 8) episode of Today.

The You People star said she has been “on a healing journey” since losing her longtime partner, rapper Nipsey Hussle. Hussle was shot multiple times in the parking lot of his store in Los Angeles and died March 31, 2019. London told Kotb that she was “trying not to” carry the “traumatic” experience with her.

Kotb praised London as soon as they sat down for the interview, saying she and Bush Hager “fell in love” with her during the commercial break.

“We just fell in love in the three-minute commercial break, in five seconds of talking to you. You are a bright light,” she told the actress. “I feel like you’re on a healing journey. Some people carry around everything with them their whole life— not you.”

London replied, “I feel like after going through something very traumatic, I always say it opened me up to everything that ever happened to me in my life. And so, instead of being so vulnerable, I am cracked open. I cannot go back to who I was in the past.”

Bush Hager and Kotb then asked London for advice on raising a teenager, since their children are still ages 10 or below.

“Well, lucky you!” London joked. “Relish the moment.”

But she expressed that she’s “very conscious” of how she handles her grief as a parent of two.

“I’ve been extremely open with them about the grief process as much as I can,” she told Kotb and Bush Hager. “But also I’m extremely intentional with them and really conscious of how I’m influencing them.”

London added that they keep her “afloat.” She said, “I always say they deserve a healthy, happy, joyful mom and I don’t want to rob them of that experience.”

Hussle and London were dating for six years when he died in 2019 at the age of 33. The couple share one child, while London has another son from a previous relationship.

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
